🏘 Today, the PLG on Housing Market & Housing Delivery hosted a panel of elected colleagues and industry leaders for a discussion at UK Construction Week, focussing on the need to consider a balance between brownfield and greenbelt development with regards to UK housing delivery. The discussion explored: - The need to reevaluate the Government's brownfield first focus in order to adequately address the housing supply gap - Properly equipping the planning system with the skills and funding required to effectively manage current capacity - A wider acceptance is needed of the reality of the greenbelt, much of it is not actually green - Reintroduction of local housing targets and a nationwide focus on making sure that up-to-date local plans are in place 🗣 Thank you to our panellists, participants and colleagues at UK Construction Week who helped organise the event. Timber Queensland has released its key policy recommendations in the lead up to the state election to support essential timber supply chains to meet the state’s growing housing and construction needs. Timber Queensland CEO Michael Stephens said “Our local plantation softwood and native hardwood and cypress forest sectors already make a significant contribution to the supply of timber and engineered wood products for the state’s building needs. However, Queensland’s population is bursting at the seams and will need more timber to meet future housing and construction demand including for our homes, schools, hospitals, apartments and offices.” “The good news is that with the right policy settings and provision of resource security, the industry can invest in more forest resources and new plant and equipment together with skilled jobs to meet the rising demand for building materials such as timber.” View the policy: https://lnkd.in/gcVWBxWt View the Media Release: https://lnkd.in/gvwUWdRv

We’ve responded to the UK House of Lords Built Environment Committee inquiry on the grey belt. Our response highlights that a “brownfield first” approach, which also contains measures to unlock grey belt land, is a positive step towards building much-needed high quality housing provision across the country. However, it is vital that this is accompanied by the necessary infrastructure and amenities to provide material benefit to people’s quality of life. ➡️ Read our full response: https://ow.ly/CfAF50UbNa7

According to CPRE's 2022 report 'State of Brownfield' an estimated 1.2 million homes could be built across 66,720 acres of brownfield land in the UK.
