“What does this say about our priorities, and what does it say about how we treat people who are experiencing one of the hardest things they’ve ever had to go through in life.” Ben Smith, CEO Mornington Community Support Centre. Almost 4,000 people are on a waiting list for public housing on the Mornington Peninsula. A third of our residents are experiencing some form of rental stress. Too many in our community are sleeping rough on our foreshores or in their cars. There is one crisis accommodation facility on the Mornington Peninsula - The Ranch. The Ranch is entirely community-funded and managed by @MorningtonCommunitySupportCentre, @SouthernPeninsulaCommunitySupportCentre and @WesternPortCommunitySupportCentre. The future of The Ranch is uncertain. We are very proud to be working with @Peninsula Films to tell the story of the people for whom The Ranch is home. And we’d love to see you at the premiere screening of The Ranch - at Peninsula Cinemas Rosebud on Monday August 5th at 7pm, as part of Homelessness Week. There’ll be a Q&A to follow the screening that will unpack some of the issues uncovered in the film, and what you can do to be part of the solution. Our hope is that the film will help inform conversations locally, and provide a sense of urgency to policy makers, to create change. See the preview and to purchase tickets, head to https://lnkd.in/g_8VnUrA The film was made possible with financial support from the Mornington Peninsula Shire Creative Economy Grant and the Mornington Rotary Club. #communitysupportingcommunity #morningtoncommunitysupportcentre #volunteer #homelessnessawareness #homlessnessonthepeninsula #sleepingrough #crisis #crisisaccomodation #morningtonpeninsula

Our commitment to family and community support has always been at the core of what we do. Our ins and outs for 2024: 👍 In: Strengthening Families We focus on keeping families together, supporting them to create safe, nurturing environments for their children. 👎 Out: Short-Term Solutions We have learnt that quick fixes don't address the root causes of family separation. 👍 In: Sustainable Community Support We're investing in long-term community development, training volunteers, and partnering with local governments for lasting change. 👎 Out: One-Size-Fits-All Approach Every child, family, and community is unique and deserves a tailored approach. 👍 In: Personalised Care and Support Our programs are designed to meet specific needs, whether it’s reuniting families, finding an alternative family, or providing resources to support families. 👎 Out: Dependency on Institutional Care Moving away from relying on institutional care that isolates children from real-life experiences and community ties. #ChildsiFoundation #FamilyFirst #CommunityCare #InsandOuts #NewYear

We write many #affordablehousing and #unhoused services #grants but other than the #HUD Section 202 and Section 811 programs, I'm not aware of any federal grant programs that target this growing #housing problem. Still, this represents a very good opportunity for nimble #nonprofits and #cities to develop fundable project concepts. States and #foundations should be very interested in funding these, and the feds will eventually catch up.

HOLY SH*T! Discovery Institute's media publishing is now pushing for more evictions in support of landlords. I won't link to this madness. They are investing in media and news publishing. It's OK; we've got webinars to teach under-resourced nonprofits how to write op-eds that only the homeless sector will read. All good! <sarcasm>
