I have 2 generations of people working in my company. 40% GenZ and 60% Millennials. Working with them is way more fun than I imagined. Here’s the thing: GenZ:  - They are more tech-savvy - They are open to change - They desire to make an impact from day one. Whereas, Millennials:  - They are more career-driven - They seek leadership roles - They give importance to work-life balance. Despite these differences, both GenZ and Millennials in our company share some amazing traits. The best part?  They bring unique perspectives to life and experiences that complement each other and contribute to our company's growth. Both of them bring the unstoppable hustle to our game by bringing their different creative side. However, their perspectives and skills always collide together. But they show a strong work ethic and a commitment to achieving our goals. They are like the two opposite poles of a magnet that fit perfectly. And we need a balance of both for our company to function at its best. Us millennials were living our best lives last night. USHER took us back! 👋🏽This morning I'm hopping into more of the HR+Marketing vibe and asking all my peeps to weigh in. Like many of the ICONs, Usher leaned into a great marketing strategy. 🔥He kept some great momentum from his Las Vegas residency (which pulled in over $114M - higher than any other Usher tour) 🔥He dropped a new album rooted in his strength of storytelling - and immediately after the Halftime show you were prompted to go listen. 🔥He dropped his tour dates (which I don't know why in the hell Houston isn't on the list 😂) 🔥His skates collab is up next - he had us all wanting to level up our 🛼 skills - even after the pandemic era of skating. How could this translate into the workplace for us 'People' people? 👉🏽 Even as a seasoned professional, know what your ongoing audience (read: employees) need. 👉🏽 Choose the right stakeholders to hype up/help your initiatives (I wasn't the only one screaming with Lil Jon, Luda, Alicia Keys, and H.E.R. came out!) 👉🏽 Timing is everything. Period. 👉🏽 Build momentum and market your sh*t. I remember writing an article for The Muse 10 years ago about how hated and misunderstood most millennials were at work. Back then, we were the new kids on the block with short attention spans and an imperious demand for respect at work. Now? We've gone from renegade newcomers to battle-scarred leaders. We're the ones holding the budgets and making the strategic decisions guiding companies large and small. As a Gen X'er working in a predominantly Gen Z and millennial environment, I’ve learned that you don’t need to be “on trend” to build real connections. What I’ve realized is that being transparent about my life experiences and genuinely listening goes a long way in bridging the gap. Sharing the ups and downs of the journey, and being relatable (rather than always “relatable”), builds trust far better than trying to stay current with the latest memes or TikTok trends. 😅 What we bring—our values, experience, and different perspectives—are an added value, not a replacement for what’s trending. So if you find yourself in a room full of fresh energy and new ideas, remember that your experience is a resource, and your authenticity can create space for deeper connection. It’s been refreshing to see how openness and storytelling have allowed me to bond with colleagues from all walks of life.
