The peak wildfire season in Scotland is typically between March and May when accumulations of dead and dried-out vegetation provide a fuel source to help flames to spread. However, an unusual set of weather conditions combined to spark the recent late-January blaze at Assynt near Lochinver in Sutherland; ✔️Linked to the jet stream track, a key driver of UK weather, 2023/24’s named Atlantic storms are just one name away from equalling 2015/2016’s number of named storms since storm naming was introduced in 2015. Associated with this stormy pattern and where the region was also subject to a yellow warning for wind, winds gusting between 60-70mph brought down a power line which set fire to vegetation. ✔️ However, the unusual timing of the fire was also coincident with an unseasonably warm temperature, with the Met Office having provisionally confirmed a new UK January maximum temperature record of 19.6C in nearby Kinlochewe on 28 January. #wildfires #atlantic #storms #temperature

Forecasting a hurricane is only the first step - how much damage will it do and where? That is where Climatility comes in with detailed forecast algorithms for the IMPACT of storms, not just the wind speeds or rain amounts.
Director of Forecast Analytics @ Climatility specializing in Climate Change and the Emergency Preparedness impacts
Here is an example of Climatility forecasting for Miama-Dade for Hurricane Helene scheduled to hit the Florida panhandle on Thursday... The main takeaway is the Storm impact that uses machine learning algorithms to predict the relative impact of the weather on system reliability as well as weather warnings for dangerous wind gusts, heavy precipitation as well as other extreme weather conditions. The much-advertised tropical system threatening Florida has now been identified. In these fluid situations, it's more important to focus on impacts than get caught up in semantics. For example, the proven Baron Model can help you prepare for flooding that will likely be outside the cone. #FLwx This is just one of several tools we have available that help you stay focused on what really matters during a tropical storm: https://lnkd.in/e2Q5TXyJ
