October is American Pharmacists Month, and we are highlighting Ole Miss pharmacy alums daily to celebrate all the fantastic work pharmacists do! Pharmacists are crucial members of the healthcare field and use their medical expertise in various career paths.
Hi everyone! I am Elizabeth Patton, an alumnus of the School of Pharmacy class of 2018. I am the Director of Pharmacy and consultant Pharmacist at the Mississippi Veterans Home in Oxford, MS.
Why would you encourage a student to pursue pharmacy?
In the field of pharmacy, the possibilities of practice are so vast. As the scope of practice continues to expand, so will the many opportunities afforded to us. Within the field, you could work in retail, military, public health, ambulatory care, specialty, industry, academia, institutional, long-term care, etc. We play a major role in the healthcare team and are most times the most accessible to the patients. It is so rewarding to serve the community in this capacity.
What do you love about being a pharmacist?
I love being able to provide optimal care for our patients, and I love the trust that they have in us to provide that care. I also love being able to serve and give back to a population that has done so much for us.
What do you love about the Ole Miss School of Pharmacy?
Ole Miss SOP provides an environment for you to really explore the many opportunities that are out there. While the curriculum is rigorous, the support and encouragement are always there. The connections with all the pharmacy organizations practicing pharmacists, as well as the access to a wide array of rotation opportunities, really help the students see and experience all that the field of pharmacy has to offer.
