This past year, we took pride in the fact that two respected thought leaders in interventional cardiology and endovascular interventions delivered speeches at the Leipzig Interventional Course (LINC) on Avinger's Lumivascular technology. LINC is a leading global forum for new methods and technology in the field of vascular medicine held each year in Leipzig, Germany. • Dr. Arne Schwindt, a vascular surgeon at St. Franziskus Hospital in Münster, Germany and a pioneer in the OCT-guided treatment of vascular disease, featured Avinger's Pantheris OCT-guided atherectomy system and the results of the INSIGHT trial in his presentation, "Gender Differences in Treatment of ISR Lesions with the Pantheris Atherectomy Catheter." The INSIGHT trial was designed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of Avinger's Pantheris image-guided atherectomy system for treating in-stent restenosis (ISR) in lower extremity arteries. • Dr. Michael Lichtenberg, Chief Medical Officer and Director of the Angiology Department and Vascular Center at Klinikum Arnsberg, presented interim data from the post-market IMAGE-BTK trial designed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of Avinger's Pantheris SV OCT-guided atherectomy system in treating below-the-knee lesions. With the conclusion of enrollment in JC Medical’s Early Feasibility Study (EFS) evaluating the J-Valve for symptomatic patients at high risk for cardiac surgery with severe aortic regurgitation, I wanted to share a few reflections: 1.     While research in the US can present challenges in the post-COVID environment, the dedication and efforts of the research teams exceeded all expectations. From the study’s National Principal Investigators (PIs) and site PIs to the research nurses to the imagers and hybrid teams, the expertise and commitment to help advance new technologies for patient care were truly commendable. 2.     The commitment of JC Medical’s field team, clinical team members, quality, manufacturing, R&D, operations that made the trial successful in such a short period of time is greatly appreciated and inspiring. Talent is always important, but there are intangibles that become critical in high-pressure situations that cannot be understated. 3.     The FDA’s review branch for heart valve therapies is working hard to ensure public health and are truly committed as an organization to working to help advance new patient technology. 4.     Cardiac Imaging is so critically important as we move to treat new pathologies like the transcatheter treatment for AR. As Cardiac MR becomes a more utilized tool and part of the valvular heart disease guidelines, we will be able to better understand to which patient populations we should direct our therapies. 5.     Patient input into research efforts, as well as their trust, remains integral to the process. 6.     The Cardiovascular field has always been an evidenced-based practice with great interest to move to new heights to improve outcomes. 🚨 New Publication Alert! 🚨 We’re excited to share our latest research on the impact of veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) on right ventricular (RV) function in ARDS patients. This study provides key insights into the progression of RV dysfunction over time. 📖 Study Title: Assessing Right Ventricle Over Time in Patients on Veno-Venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: Insights from Serial Echocardiography 🔬 Background: ARDS often requires VV-ECMO for severe cases, but its effects on RV function are not well-studied. We aimed to fill this gap by examining RV dysfunction in patients undergoing VV-ECMO. 🩺 Methods: Retrospective study at Mayo Clinic with 70 patients. Evaluated RV function using serial echocardiograms post-ECMO. 📊 Key Results: 60.6% had normal RV function at ECMO initiation, dropping to 42% later. RV dysfunction worsened with increased ECMO flow and duration. Moderate RV function decrease linked to ECMO flow (OR = 2.32) and duration (OR = 1.01). 🔍 Discussion: Our findings emphasize the need for regular RV monitoring during VV-ECMO therapy to improve outcomes. 💡 Clinical Implications: Frequent RV assessments should be integrated into clinical practice to aid risk stratification and personalized care. 📖 Read the Full Study: https://lnkd.in/eXVMsgyk We hope this research enhances ARDS patient management and understanding of VV-ECMO’s impact on cardiac function. 'First, Do No Harm: Expert Reflections on a Rare Bone Disease' is an opportunity to learn about how patients and families contribute to a greater understanding of rare disease through the story on one rare bone condition, Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Clinicians, patients and advocates will share stories about the lived experience of people with FOP from the 18th century to the present day. Attendees will also be able to visit the Hunterian Museum and the skeleton of a man who lived with this condition in the 1700s. FOP is an example of a rare genetic condition that has been familiar to medicine for hundreds of years, but is not familiar to the average healthcare professional. It is characterised by the abnormal development of bone in skeletal muscles and connective tissues, progressively locking joints in place and limiting movement. However without healthcare professional awareness of FOP the basic tenet of medicine, ‘First, do no harm’, is easily missed. When living with FOP any trauma, including surgery, can trigger a flare response resulting in abnormal bone growth in the affected area. You will hear from clinicians and advocates who have been pivotal in working towards treatment and improving the lives of those living with this rare condition.
