Thank you for doing this, Herzog Foundation! There are profound theological and pedagogical reasons to at least be asking these questions. Sure, it blows up much of the way we think about traditional school. But in general, doesn't the assumptions that come from starting with the gospel as our first premise also blow up a lot of assumptions! There's enough data out there about the pedagogical effects on students and their capacities; it provides more time for teachers to prep and to stay sharp throughout the week; it creates more space for recognizing the importance of the family; (if Monday is the day "off,") it encourages greater participation in and enjoyment of our corporate worship. I could go on and on. It's part of the reason why it's one of the first podcast episodes I put together for RenewEd. 24 minute listen here: https://lnkd.in/gaRDXAKk

Howard University Trustees made the decision to rescind the honorary degree of Sean “Puffy” Combs, a move that has sparked a wave of mixed reactions among alumni and the broader public. As an alumna, I find myself grappling with the implications of this decision and the broader message it sends. First and foremost, it is essential to state unequivocally that I do not condone violence against women or predatory practices of any kind. These actions are reprehensible and deserve to be addressed with the utmost seriousness. However, this decision raises several complex questions about the nature of humanity, accountability, and redemption. From one perspective, rescinding the honorary degree can be seen as a strong stance against unacceptable behavior. It reinforces the university’s commitment to upholding values of respect, integrity, and safety for all individuals. In a time when institutions are increasingly held accountable for their affiliations and endorsements, this action might be viewed as necessary to distance the university from individuals whose actions are incompatible with these values.
Today, Howard University announced that the Board of Trustees has unanimously voted to accept the return of Sean Combs' honorary degree, originally conferred in May 2014. The vote took place during a regularly scheduled board meeting. For more details, read the full announcement on The Dig linked below. https://lnkd.in/gm9RY3G6

Huston-Tillotson University (HT) recently unveiled its strategic plan for the next decade. Approved by the HT Board of Trustees, the plan, titled “From First to Foremost: Huston-Tillotson University 2024-2034,” is the culmination of an inclusive process that spanned several months and included the gathering of input from representatives of several key stakeholder groups, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, community and business leaders and local elected officials. “Our 10-year plan establishes a clear, long-term vision for HT,” said Melva K. Wallace, who is completing her second year as the university’s 7th president. “It is the blueprint that we will use during the next ten years to solidify our position not only as a premier historically Black university, but as a top institution of higher education in the state of Texas. It sets a focused direction for the 149-year old institution by reinforcing its commitment to Austin and all of the communities it serves, implementing strategic initiatives that reflects HT’s strengths, and underscoring its mission to provide excellent educational opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds, and becoming a major contributor to Austin’s workforce demands and the Texas marketplace.” Click the link below to read more to to access the strategic plan. https://lnkd.in/gVPAJmm3 #HTYou #FromFirstToForemost

In 2021, Texas Woman’s University took a monumental step forward by becoming a university system. This evolution represents not just a structural change but a strategic commitment to expanding our impact and fostering innovation in higher education. As a university system, we are better positioned to serve Texas more broadly, enhance educational accessibility, and drive greater prosperity for all. This transformation underscores our dedication to excellence and our mission to empower students through comprehensive, high-quality education. The role of a chancellor in this context extends far beyond academic leadership. It involves engaging with political landscapes, advocating for policies that support our goals, and securing resources to sustain our growth. Navigating the complexities is crucial to championing the needs of our students, faculty, and staff, and ensuring the continued success of our institution.
