On this day one month ago, what were we up to...? We gathered together as Tom Golisano announced the historic $50 million commitment to build the Golisano Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Institute! Everyone was touched to hear from Emily Bruhsafer, a decorated Special Olympics athlete and employee of Noyes Health, as she shared what this important work means to her. What exactly is an IDD? Well done! AOTA's Susan Cahill PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA , APTA's Toby Long, and their work group created this recruitment and retention guide for the Early Childhood/Education/pediatric rehab fields. As a colleague, I would love to know how I can best support others in their roles. What do YOU need to feel safe, secure, honored, and valued in your work place? There are so many great strategies that are above my pay-grade (Such as "loan forgiveness", yes please!) but others we can implement in our own settings. Suggestions and examples are welcome.
AOTA Director of Evidence Based Practice Susan Cahill PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA participated in the ECTA Center's Technical Workgroup, which led to the development of a curated guide with key strategies that address personnel shortages among those who serve young children with disabilities and their families. Guardianship does not prevent your adult child from buying a boat on eBay, opening 16 credit cards while on a trip to the mall, or hitching a ride two hours from their home to visit a friend. But sometimes parents feel pressure to put guardianship in place simply because their child is turning 18. It is important to understand that there are a wide range of options for decision-making in adulthood and one of the best ways to really protect your child is to help them build the skills to be as self-determined as possible. We want our kids to know which choices they can make themselves, which choices they can make with support, and which choices they might want someone else to make for them. This looks like a great webinar series hosted by CYVYC of Institute for Community Inclusion. #guardianship #guardianshipalternatives #decisionmaking #IDD #developmentaldisabilities #specialeducation #IEP #transitionplanning #transitiontoadulthood

Globally, millions of people with intellectual disabilities experience dramatically higher rates of preventable disease, chronic pain and suffering, and premature death in every country around the world. That's why Special Olympics BC initiated the Champions for Inclusive Health Stakeholder Coalition. These key partners from around the province dedicate time and energy to this important issue. So great to see Getafe CF from Spain's La Liga making a powerful gesture supporting autism awareness and neurodiversity acceptance by wearing noise canceling headphones during their match! By wearing headphones, Getafe players highlighted the sensory overload many autistic individuals experience and shed light on the challenges faced by the autistic community. Kudos to Getafe CF for using their platform to raise awareness for such an important cause. Let's continue breaking down barriers and celebrating neurodiversity in sports and beyond. Such initiatives should become more common in sports, fostering inclusivity and understanding across all communities. https://lnkd.in/gEag7hs3

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion begins with helping those in most need of thy mercy. Let us always find ways to empower people with disabilities so they can have a safe and fulfilling life. So, reflect on the teachings of Saint Mother Teresa who inspired hope and offered a renewed focus on living a life of love, service, and faith. A few of her quotes are as follows:: “Peace begins with a smile.” “If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” “If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.” “Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time and always start with the person nearest you.” My purpose in life is to offer faith and hope to others, as well as create a village where people with disabilities can live together in unity. My hope is to foster partnerships so we can develop a living village for the intellectually disabled. Please help an organization which has a focus of helping the disabled. Research is great but individual support makes an immediate difference in the lives of others. It only takes faith and action to make a difference! Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!
