A new Data Byte looks at the long-term decline in the number of institutionalized people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD). In 1967, 29% of adults with IDD in the U.S. lived in large state-run institutions, while most others resided with family. But gradually, community living became the norm, and by 2020, less than 1% of adult Americans with IDD were still institutionalized. https://z.umn.edu/9k6a

Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities recently held a hearing for new proposed rules that would go into effect on July 1 that would be administered by the Ohio Department of Children and Youth who has submitted to become the lead agency for Part C Early Intervention. Changes would include: ✨ Eligibility for Part C Early Intervention services expanding to include newborns born at or before 28 weeks. ✨ More support for parents by almost doubling Units of Early Intervention services from 55 to 100 per year. However, as we celebrate these strides forward, it's vital to acknowledge the challenges that may arise. Counties already facing high demand for Early Intervention services could feel the strain without additional resources. Longer wait times, decreased quality of care, and stressed providers are all potential consequences. That's why we're hoping for significant investment in the Early Intervention system to ensure its effectiveness. Read more from Groundwork Ohio

Sadly, children with disabilities are more likely to be sent to an institution. Many families feel like they have no other option because the support they need is not available. This must change. We are working with governments and local authorities to implement services so families have the support they need locally. This is just one action we can take to help keep vulnerable children at home. Family and community services not only allow children more chances of development, love, and care but also help children with disabilities to integrate more with their communities—breaking down misconceptions.
