It’s out! 🎉📚🌱 Happy to share my latest research with Jun.-Prof. Dr. Anja Danner-Schröder-Schröder and Dr. Christian A. Mahringer in the Journal of Management Studies.  In our study, we unpack the role of the lived body in routine recreation in extreme contexts. We examined Restaurant Nolla, a zero-waste fine-dining restaurant in Helsinki, during the COVID-19 pandemic and find that ‘embodied connection work’ plays an integral part in actors’ attempts to establish new ways of operating. Specifically, we show how this active process of making connections between actors and actions consists of embodied imagining and embodied protecting—two interrelated practices that enable the reintegration of stakeholders and the reassembling of what matters to them. Since 2012, Ory Laboratory has pursued a groundbreaking goal: to eliminate loneliness and foster a society where even bedridden individuals can lead fulfilling lives. The café's mission resonated deeply with me on a personal level. My father, after being paralyzed, faced significant challenges in his career as a lawyer. Unable to access courtrooms, he could have easily given up. Instead, he chose to challenge the status quo, working with several lawyers who assisted him in court. His determination and resilience led him to build a highly successful career, demonstrating that physical limitations do not define one's capabilities or potential. I couldn’t be more proud of him ❤️ One of the most remarkable aspects of this café is its use of OriHime robots. These robots are controlled remotely by bedridden individuals, allowing them to interact with customers, take orders, and engage in meaningful social interactions. This innovative use of technology not only addresses loneliness but also showcases how we can bridge gaps in healthcare and social inclusion through creative solutions. As we all grapple with the effects of prolonged confinement, the lines between "disabled" and "able-bodied" have blurred, making Ory Laboratory’s work more pertinent than ever. This café exemplifies how we can rethink community engagement and social participation, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their physical state, can contribute meaningfully to society. 🌍 Cultural Insights from Sicily: Pasta for Lunch, Pizza for Dinner 🍝🍕 🌍 Today, while driving through the beautiful landscapes of Sicily with my husband, we were deciding on what to have for lunch. I casually suggested pizza, only to hear him say, “𝘉𝘢𝘣𝘦, 𝘸𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘱𝘪𝘻𝘻𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘭𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘩—𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳. 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘭𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘩, 𝘱𝘪𝘻𝘻𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳.” And then it hit me: in the 5 years I’ve been coming to Sicily, I had never noticed this cultural nuance! It’s a reminder of how subtle yet powerful local traditions can be—and how important it is to immerse ourselves fully in the places we visit or the industries we work in. Just like learning the “rules” of pizza and pasta in Sicily, understanding the culture and values of those we work with, whether clients or colleagues, is essential for building authentic relationships and delivering meaningful experiences. As I continue to build our tours in Sicily, these small lessons remind me how important it is to stay curious and open to new ways of seeing the world, no matter how long we’ve been at it.
