Ben Taub Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine and Director of TIRR Memorial Hermann's Brain Injury Research Center, emphasize that health literacy can impact the comprehension, assimilation, and utilization of health care education and recommendations, and they urge clinicians to attend to health literacy when providing education and recommendations to individuals with TBI. Supporting burnt out healthcare professionals prioritise their own wellbeing needs first | Founder of Rebellious Health | Adventurer | GP Locum | Lifestyle Medic | Quiet Rebel
Thank you Dr Tom Gedman, Dr Linda Mizun and everyone for sharing your thoughts to this post. It was an inspiring, much needed, accidental deep dive into the power of connection and community. I can't wait for the upcoming workshop for Rebellious Health (a 10 minute catch up very easily turned into an hour and could have been longer!) - thank you both. I believe disconnection is at the root cause of much of today's crises - from the widespread global mental health crisis, to the evil and suffering that is inflicted on our fellow human beings, to the existential climate crisis that threatens us all. Disconnection first from self - as our bodies and our minds subconsciously protect us from the little and big T traumas that are rampant throughout the world, a direct effect of cyclical unprocessed generational traumas and globalised cultural, political and economic systems that are based mainly on exploitation, unsustainable growth and inequality. This can manifest in a myriad of individual and societal responses. I try not to use the word disorder/disease/condition, which infers a personal or more biological failing rather than a protective reaction to an abnormal situation. From numbness, apathy, anxiety, depression, burnout, dissociation, addiction, sociopathy, narcissism, greed, psychopathy and many more I haven't mentioned. Disconnection from others and community as we live in ways that are so far removed from our innate evolutionary and natural selves. The loneliness epidemic underpinning the majority of the presentations we see in GP and A&E as humans are not biologically wired to shoulder the weight of life alone. Research shows social isolation is more harmful to health than smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and yet - where is the urgency to combat this systemically, the public health awareness? In a hyperconnected virtual world, we are more disconnected physically to each other than ever. And finally - disconnection from nature. Literally by boxing ourselves for too long inside cars, inside offices, homes, buildings. Using artificial blue light to force us to become a 24 hour, 365 days a year 'productive' society. We aren't meant to be inside for such long periods of time. We aren't meant to put our bodies through this. Disconnecting physically from the Earth and the elements for prolonged periods with rubber soled shoes and indoor living. Fighting against the natural order of cyclical nature with it's seasons and cycles - distinct periods of time where most of the natural world rests, slows, recovers, followed by periods of growth, life, energy. Disconnection from nature by destroying our natural resources, our collective home. By separating our connection to the earth. "Seek first to understand" is a mantra we all need more of in life, particularly in such a polarising and divided world. I am so glad to be part of a community having these conversations openly after many years of feeling quite existential and alone!
GP & TEAM CBT Therapist | I Talk About Empathy, Trust and Connection in Healthcare | Founder of the Slow GP Movement | Principle Physician at WellFounded
Connection is a cure. To ourselves, other people and to nature. What a start to a Friday Morning to speak with 2 powerhouse doctors in the field of community and clinician wellbeing. Dr Emma Presern is a trailblazing GP with her Rebellious health program, midway through the first cohort but with an extremely bright future to help a nation of burnt out medics connect with themselves and each other. Dr Linda Mizun is a social genius A&E doctor who connects streets, neighbourhoods and whole communities in Sheffield and further afield around the topic of holistic, evidence based health. Love powers both of these fantastic women to build better systems and societies to maximise health in patients and clinicians. Today we scheduled a 10 minute catch up about our upcoming “Connect” webinar for Rebellious Health in July. It turned into a recorded 60 minute lively discussion about the immense power for community, emotional authenticity and lifestyle medicine to empower people. We talked about the “5 Secrets of Effective Communication Framework” from TEAM CBT creator, David Burns and how I use it to build trust in GP and cognitive therapy consultations. The bottom line to connection is this. Seek first to understand before being understood. If you are confused about why someone is thinking, feeling or acting in certain ways you haven’t asked the right questions or connected with them fully. It doesn’t have time take hours to connect. It can take as little as 60 empathic seconds. We will share our recording soon so watch this space. 😊

In the Designing Equitable Care for Kidneys (DECK) study, we screen for both clinical and social factors. We identify unmet social needs using the PRAPARE tool and organize data into summary domains to identify needs. We’ve formulated these domains into the SHIFT criteria: 1. Safety [interpersonal] 2. Housing stability 3. Insecurity [Food] 4. Financial difficulties [utilities] 5. Transportation Understanding these needs creates an opportunity to create a SHIFT in a person's access to necessary resources. We believe, and prior research evidence supports, that addressing these social determinants of health can significantly impact clinical care outcomes by reducing barriers and improving overall health management and adherence to treatment plans.
