In this insightful interview with #SAFETY4SEA, Georgia Spencer-Rowland, Shipping Policy Manager at International Chamber of Shipping, shed light on the maritime industry's forward momentum towards sustainability, emphasizing the importance of embracing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. As the industry sails towards the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) net-zero by 2050 ambition, the focus is not only on decarbonizing through the adoption of low and zero-carbon fuels but also on ensuring the maritime workforce is equipped for the evolving landscape. This includes the critical aspect of fostering an equitable transition, ensuring that the shift towards a greener economy creates fair and inclusive opportunities for all, thus making the maritime sector an attractive field for a diverse and skilled workforce. Considering these developments, it's evident that organizations like #NAMEPA play a crucial role in steering the maritime industry towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future. NAMEPA’s stance on promoting sustainable maritime industry best practices, advocacy for environmental protection, and commitment to education aligns with the broader industry's objectives and efforts as outlined by Spencer-Rowland. As we navigate towards a sustainable future, the collaboration between associations like NAMEPA and key industry stakeholders will be instrumental in ensuring the maritime sector not only meets but exceeds its ESG ambitions. #SaveOurSeas #ESG #NAMEPA #MSPProgram #Sustainability #Maritime #SAFETY4SEA To learn more about NAMEPA’s Maritime Sustainability Passport® Program visit https://ow.ly/iVmH50RfcLr ESG performance is a key differentiator in the maritime industry (https://ow.ly/5OwG50RfcLq) https://ow.ly/RYqU50RfcLs

Author and speaker, bewitched by ships and ports, passionate for the decarbonization of the maritime industry, always trusting in science, and with a firm grasp of maritime and port economics.
The answer is... cabotage. Source: ANTAQ - Agência Nacional de Transportes Aquaviários. However, it is important to note the following methodological issue: The Brazilian methodology is as follows: Inland = river transport; Cabotage = between Brazilian ports + between an inland port and a sea port that is not located at the mouth of the corresponding river. In other words, the methodology is biased in favour of cabotage.

How can we get more #harbourcraft plying the Singapore waters to be greener? Costs, resistance to new technology, and vessel infrastructure are some of the roadblocks identified by experts at the Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) Accelerating Digitalisation and Decarbonisation Conference panel discussion. Because the harbour craft sector is highly fragmented, streamlining and consolidating its business operations – both seaward and landward – is also imperative in lowering costs and enhancing efficiency, said Mr. Danny Lien, President of the Singapore Association of Shipsuppliers & Services. Mr. Nakul Malhotra, Vice President (Emerging Opportunities Portfolio) of Wilhelmsen group suggested having a “port orchestrator” to coordinate various activities and processes that happen within a port. In the latest issue of Safety4Sea our President Captain Andre LeGoubin MNM MA FNI joins a number of maritime leaders in answering the question: how can we create the right culture and mindset for an ESG-fit maritime industry? As a set of important metrics used to assess an organisation’s environmental and social impact (and one that increasingly determines investor decisions), Captain LeGoubin stresses the need for companies to not lose sight of the ‘S’ in ESG. Being able to prove the measures organisations take to ensure crew safety, well-being, and quality training are all vital elements for the industry to ensure it is hitting its environmental, social, and governance goals. “Contributing to the ESG Watch column has been another great opportunity to highlight the need and value of putting cadets on ships,” said Captain LeGoubin. “The best way to ensure continuity of onboard training is by every new vessel carrying at least two cadets. A great way for future officers to learn. Today’s cadets are the brightest and best the world has ever seen. They must be listened to for most care deeply about our planet and if we engage and listen to them, and provide opportunities for them to sail, they will help us develop the right culture and mindset for an ESG-fit maritime future.” To read Captain LeGoubin’s insights and what other maritime leaders have to say about ESG read the article here: Creating the right mindset for an ESG in maritime https://buff.ly/4dTy5vX 🌍⚓ #NauticalInstitute #ESG #Cadets
