In 1994, the world community sent a clear signal by adopting the only legally binding treaty promoting good land stewardship—the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). This book examines the first thirty years of the UNCCD and how it is working to turn land degradation into restoration, while ensuring those who depend on land the most have a say in how decisions are made. https://lnkd.in/eFuzsqKf

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a draft resolution on holding a High-Level meeting addressing the existential threats posed by sea-level rise on the sidelines of #UNGA79 General Debate. I thank all Member States for their valued support in prioritizing this urgent issue and also for prioritizing the urgent need to address the existential threats posed by sea-level rise, ranging from irrecoverable loss of ancestral lands, as well as the loss of the rich culture and heritage, not to mention the lasting destabilization of livelihoods. I, therefore, look forward to open, transparent, and inclusive consultations in the General Assembly towards finalizing the organizational arrangements and modalities of the proposed 25 September high-level plenary meeting. This meeting will be exceptionally held on the sidelines of the General Debate of the seventy-ninth session of the Assembly. I am confident that, together, we can chart a path toward an action-oriented outcome that would prevent, protect, and resolve the untenable situations arising out of sea level rise. https://lnkd.in/g3p-wEzk

In June 2023, the #HighSeasTreaty was adopted! It is the first legally binding international agreement to govern the conservation and #SustainableUse of #MarineBiodiversity. One year later, the High Seas Alliance launched a countdown to reach the goal of 60 ratifications needed for the Treaty to enter into force at #UNOC3. 🔔 High Seas Treaty and the role of the EU. Interesting new policy brief from the Brussels-based think tank, Europe Jacques Delors. 💡 There is much work that the EU and its member states can already do to prepare for implementation, in particular laying the groundwork for establishing marine protected areas in the High Seas. 👉 The EU played a critical role in the negotiations leading to the Treaty’s successful negotiation and adoption in 2023, but significant efforts are still needed to garner widespread support for swift ratification and implementation, particularly from regional groups. 👉 In view of this important next step to ensure the success of the High Seas Treaty, the EU should now champion ratification and start preparing for implementation. 👉 A key first step would be for the European Parliament to approve ratification ahead of the European elections. 👉 The EU and its member states should also prioritise making progress with ratification efforts nationally and leverage the 52 members of the High Ambition Coalition for BBNJ to maintain political momentum and coordinate efforts for early ratification. 👉 To ensure the effective working of the Treaty once it enters into force, the EU should also help build strong institutional foundations, notably through the establishment of a Preparatory Commission. At the #OceanDecadeConference 2024, MedPAN has underlined the key role of the existing regional networks of #MPAs to support the creation and the effective management of #MPAs beyond national juridictions. Environmental Communication (Journal) at International Environmental Communication Association (IECA)
“This paper argues for crafting networked cultures of care attentive to the toxic environmental legacies of the Syrian conflict. Cultures of care must be sensitive to the affective relationships of interdependence between Syrians and their local ecosystems forged during the lifetime of revolutionary struggle.” — Noor Ghazal Aswad, https://lnkd.in/gcYdCDr7 “Environmental Communication has rarely published research challenging global militaries or addressing the environmental impacts of the U.S. military that poses threats to air, land, and ocean. Thus, more critical scholarship of the military’s environmental impacts is needed, full stop.” — Tiara Naputi https://lnkd.in/gaAgtb7q Two compelling articles from Ghazal Aswad and Na’puti highlighting the formation of networked cultures of care amid militaristic ecological violence, and the urgency for further critical research in the journal on the military as a key actor in matters of environmental communication. Both articles are Free to Read now as part of the “Care” special issue (18.1-2) of Environmental Communication. We hope those studying these dynamics will consider these two essays as an invitation to develop further the lines of argument they persuasively call for us to consider.

On this World Water Day, as we focus on this year's theme, 'Leveraging Water for Peace,' we honor not just the essential aspect of water but also its capacity to promote peace and cooperation between nations.🚰 By ensuring equitable access, managing resources sustainably, and fostering dialogue and cooperation, we can harness the transformative power of water to build bridges rather than barriers. Together, let's turn water from a cause of conflict to a pathway for peace. Let's prioritize diplomacy over conflicts, cooperation over competition, and unity over division. If we work together, we can create a world where water symbolizes peace and harmony. 🕊️ The Value Balancing Alliance will keep working on initiatives that contribute to a sustainable future, equitable access, and sustainable management practices in collaboration with our members, partners, and supporters.🌍 By developing practical approaches and methodologies, we aim to account for the true value of nature and water to ensure it is considered in business strategies, investment decisions, and reporting practices: https://lnkd.in/e7EMn5Yj. 💧Every drop counts!💧 #ValueBalancingAlliance #WorldWaterDay #WaterForPeace
