In need of some good news today? Meet Hawa Yokie, a UN Women Generation Equity Youth Task Force member from Sierra Leone. Hawa Yokie was always curious about how things worked… Although her family wanted her to study law, she was interested in science and technology. She sneaked into the computer lab in school and taught herself computer skills. “I've always wanted to see how I can create change and make an impact in my community” Soon after completing high school, during one of her visits to a village near Kenema, she discovered that most of the girls had dropped out of school and were pregnant or had already given birth. One of the challenges that the girls highlighted to Yokie was the lack of electricity to study. So what did she do? She started researching and teaching herself about renewal energy. With the help of a mentor, she learned about solar energy and created a new technology – SolWind – which combined solar and wind energy to generate electricity for the community. “We were able to power 50 houses there,” shared Yokie. Sometimes, just one person can change the lives countless others. Photo credit: UN Women/Catianne Tijerina

When people ask me “what do UN Women UK and UN Women achieve” I signpost to stories exactly like this one. Women can empower other women in a way that no man can, not because of bias or a lack of confidence, but because we understand exactly what each other feels. Whether it’s empowering others to succeed in the workplace, taking the initiative on healthcare or education or even, creating energy to power a village when a woman from a low socioeconomic background sees someone like Hawa and feels that belief and investment it can change lives, if we promote stories like Hawa’s we might just inspire others and create greater change. I am in awe of this lady. What a powerhouse (pun intended) 🙏 THAT is what UN Women UK and UN Women achieve and they are spectacular at it
