🇪🇺 The Council and European Parliament have reached a provisional political agreement to establish the first EU-level certification framework for permanent #carbonremovals, #carbonfarming, and #carbonstorage. 🛣 This agreement marks a significant step towards introducing a comprehensive carbon removal and #soilemissionreduction framework in EU legislation, aligning with the ambitious goal of achieving #climateneutrality by 2050 as outlined in the European climate law. Key elements: 🌱 The regulation will cover various #carbonremoval and #emissionreduction activities, including permanent carbon removal, temporary carbon storage in long-lasting products, temporary carbon storage from carbon farming, and soil emission reduction. 🌍 Carbon removal activities will need to meet criteria such as quantification, additionality, long-term storage, and sustainability. 🚰 University of California, Riverside researchers have discovered bacteria from the Acetobacterium genus capable of breaking down #PFAS, or "forever chemicals," in #water. Using these bacteria to treat groundwater is cost-effective and could help meet US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards limiting PFAS levels in drinking water. Experts at University of California, Riverside have discovered a species of microbes that can effectively combat harmful forever chemicals. ✒ Soil Monitoring Law: EU Council reached the general approach. ⏭ Next step: trilogue negotiations 🌱 #Soilhealth is critical to achieving global SDGs and is defined as the continued capacity of soils to support #ecosystemservices. 🏛 As the law just passed the Council, implementation will still take time and will be carried out by member states, meaning it will vary across the EU. The Council's general approach will enable negotiations with the European Parliament on the final text. The lack of dedicated EU #soil #legislation was identified as a major issue in the #EUsoil strategy. 🔬 The law aims to make soil health monitoring obligatory, provide guiding principles for sustainable soil management, and address soil contamination risks. The law also tackles soil sealing and destruction, with mitigation principles for land use planning. Contaminated sites will be identified, mapped, and prioritised for clean-up based on risks.
