Mitochondria's Crucial Role in Zika Virus Spread and Immune Resistance Discovered! The World Mitochondria Society is beginning to outline the agenda for their annual meeting, with a spotlight on groundbreaking research, one of which sheds light on the relationship between Zika virus and mitochondria. Recent findings, from Baylor College of Medicine and Pennslyvania State University, reveal a pivotal role of the Zika Virus NS1 protein in promoting the creation of tunneling nanotubes (TNTs), facilitating the transfer of mitochondria. This transfer isn't just about energy provision for viral replication; it's a strategic maneuver aiding the virus in dodging the host's immune system. Remarkably, infected cells receiving mitochondria through TNTs exhibit a reduced interferon response, highlighting ZIKV's sophisticated immune evasion tactics.
