🌿⚡️ Element Fuels is forging ahead with a groundbreaking project: a hydrogen-powered refinery and combined-cycle power plant at the Port of Brownsville - Texas. 🏭 🌍 John Calce, Founder and co-CEO of Element Fuels, stated, ““A permit for a greenfield refinery of this size, scope and functionality has not been granted in the United States since the 1970s. This speaks to the innovative approaches we are taking to address climate and sustainability concerns in cleaner, greener ways that are new to the refinery space.” Expected to be operational by 2027, it will generate over 160,000 barrels per day of low-carbon fuels and enough hydrogen to eliminate CO2 emissions from its operations. 🚨Industry News🚨 Element Fuels is developing an innovative refinery complex designed to produce and recycle hydrogen, generating cleaner, higher-quality fuels, including high-octane gasoline and electricity. This refinery, the first of its kind since the 1970s, will process 160,000 barrels (6.7 million gallons) per day of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, using advanced technologies to address climate and sustainability concerns. Scheduled to be operational by 2027, the refinery will exclusively use high-gravity domestic shale oil to produce low-carbon fuels, significantly reducing carbon emissions. The facility will produce enough low-carbon hydrogen to meet its own needs and generate surplus electricity for the Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), supporting the local community. Built on over 240 acres at the Port of Brownsville, Texas, the project will create hundreds of high-paying jobs and support the Justice40 initiative, promoting clean energy and affordable housing in the region. Element Fuels has partnered with McDermott for engineering design services and is led by experienced industry veterans who have managed over $500 billion in capital projects. Clean Energy Fuels has completed its renewable natural gas (RNG) production facility at Ash Grove Dairy in Lake Benton, Minnesota. The one-digester facility injects pipeline-quality RNG into the interstate natural gas pipeline grid, and at full capacity, it is anticipated to supply up to 480,000 gasoline gallon equivalents (GGEs) of negative carbon-intensity RNG annually. It will also provide Clean Energy stations with clean-burning fuel for its commercial transportation fleet customers. The facility will process up to 60,000 gallons of manure each day, capture its harmful methane, and prevent it from entering the atmosphere. This biogas will be converted into an estimated 165 MMBtus of RNG every day. The project, developed by Dynamic Renewables and financed through one of Clean Energy’s production joint ventures, is worth $22 million. I’ve followed Form Energy’s progress for a while now. Cost effective and efficient long-duration energy storage has a lot of appeal. The typical duration for lithium-ion BESS is four hours; the duration for Form Energy’s iron air technology is up to 100 hours. Round trip energy efficiency and the delta between different storage technologies is an important consideration. The less surplus (low to no cost) power available the more important the consideration is. Iron air batteries are appreciably less efficient than lithium-ion. They also require more space for the same amount of storage, so their primary use will be for grid scale energy storage. CapEx for iron air BESS is reported to be about 10% of that for lithium-ion based systems. Iron is a relatively low cost and abundant resource. It is mined at enormous scale, including in countries with democratically elected governments, rule of law and meaningful protections for miners and the environment.
