For 20 years, the US healthcare system has pursued universal electronic health record (EHR) adoption and interoperability. Contraception has been overlooked in these efforts--and it’s time to change that. Integrating basic contraceptive care workflows into all EHRs could: 1. Remind care teams to offer contraceptive care routinely 2. Improve patient access to contraceptive services 3. Provide accurate data on screening, counseling, and method use 4. Facilitate electronic reporting to stakeholders 5. Enable easier participation in quality initiatives In short: standardizing contraceptive care in EHRs is crucial for comprehensive healthcare interoperability. We’re thrilled to see Emily Jones Decker, Upstream’s MEL Director, and Emily Eckert, Upstream’s Associate Director of Federal Policy, join Dr. Julia Skapik, National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC)'s Medical Director for Informatics, in explaining how adding a contraceptive care workflow to an EHR can help expand access to high quality contraceptive care. Thanks for sharing this Peter Shin! Shoutout to Julia Skapik, our CMIO, and both Emily Jones Decker and Emily Eckert from Upstream. Insights in the piece are products of our multi-year work with CDC. We've been pushing for these data elements in USCDI since version 1 draft. All of the contraceptives value sets on the NLM's Value Set Authority Center are under National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) stewardship, which I have authored and updated for the last 4 years. These, and other value sets we authored and published on VSAC, are also circulating now to assist vendors and informaticists in data segmentation for protecting reproductive health privacy and confidentiality under the following: 1. OCR Final Rule "HIPAA Privacy Rule to Support Reproductive Health Care Privacy" 2. California Assembly Bill 352 (CA AB 352) 3. Maryland House Bill 812 / Senate Bill 786 #fqhc #interoperability #womenshealth #reproductivehealth

Canada’s historic Pharmacare Bill has officially passed into law, marking a significant milestone in expanding access to essential medications like diabetes treatments and contraception for millions of Canadians. This development is a key step towards a potential universal pharmacare plan. Under the new legislation, millions of Canadians will have coverage for medications such as insulin and metformin for diabetes, as well as free contraception for women and gender-diverse individuals. The agreements with individual provinces will determine the exact rollout. While the bill doesn’t yet provide universal coverage, it creates a framework to expand access to more medications in the coming years. “Today is about pharmacare. It is a significant day for this country,” said Health Minister Mark Holland. This new legislation is part of a broader effort to ease the financial burden of healthcare on Canadians and improve public health outcomes. Bill C-64, 'An Act Respecting Pharmacare,' was recently introduced by Canada's Minister of Health, Mark Holland. This bill aims to launch a single-payer, universal health program providing medications for contraception and diabetes to Canadians nationwide, according to an article by the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA). The CPhA stated: "We have been advocating strongly for a mixed-payer system. We continue to believe that instead of replacing coverage for those already with drug plans, our approach would be more feasible, better align with provincial needs, and minimize disruptions, all while ensuring universal coverage for everyone. We also highlighted the importance of including pharmacy in the proposed legislation." 🌟Breaking Barriers: Preventing Unintended Pregnancies with Technology 🌟 Nearly half of all pregnancies, totaling 121 million each year worldwide, are unintended. For the women and girls affected, the most life-altering reproductive choice—whether or not to become pregnant—is no choice at all, explains the State of World Population 2022 report released by UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. Among the myriad reasons behind unintended pregnancies, misused appointments and daily drugs in contraception play a significant role. Integrating appointment reminders and medication alerts within medical health software emerges as a crucial solution! By leveraging these integrated solutions, we can address this multifaceted issue: 1️⃣ Enhancing Adherence: Timely medication reminders help ensure consistent and correct usage of contraceptives, significantly reducing the risk of unintended pregnancies. 2️⃣ Facilitating Follow-ups: Automated appointment reminders enable timely visits, ensuring adjustments or renewals of contraceptive methods, optimizing effectiveness. 3️⃣ Empowering Informed Choices: Accessible reminders not only promote consistency but also educate individuals on the importance of adherence to contraceptive regimens, empowering them with knowledge. The integration of these reminders within medical health software stands as a powerful tool in preventing unintended pregnancies, supporting reproductive autonomy, and promoting overall women's health. Let's champion technological advancements that not only revolutionize healthcare but also foster a world where women and girls have the resources they need for informed decisions about their bodies and futures. #HealthTech #ReproductiveHealth #WomenEmpowerment #Contraception #DigitalHealth #PreventUnintendedPregnancy #HealthcareInnovation

To continue providing convenient health care, we added an entire telehealth option for all our patients and launched TeleGYN for all. As you are aware that there are many conditions which will still require an in-person visit because of the need for an actual exam, a sonogram, blood or urine testing. To make the process simpler, we compiled a list of when you might need an in-person visit vs. a virtual visit. WHEN IS A VIRTUAL VISIT A GOOD OPTION? Results discussion Treatment monitoring Prescription refills Other questions or concerns: If other questions or concerns arise or if you need emergency contraception, counseling for unrelated conditions, that do not require a physical exam then feel free to utilize this option. Please remember that a virtual visit option is a powerful tool to help with continuity of your care. However, it can never replace an in-person visit specially in Women’s Health since there are many conditions that can be missed without a comprehensive exam and testing. WHEN IS A VIRTUAL VISIT NOT CONSIDERED A GOOD OPTION? Physical symptoms Early pregnancy confirmation STD testingck-up Prescription refills: Those refills that might require a blood pressure, weight check or blood work and ultrasound examination may necessitate an office visit. www.walkingyn.com #losangeles #california #gyn #walkingyn #askyourgyno #gyno #womenshealth #menstralhealth #womensupportingwomen #newyork #femalefounder #femaledoctor #telehealth

The long-standing consensus about mifepristone’s record of safety makes clear that it is time for the FDA to permanently remove the remaining restrictions imposed on mifepristone under the risk evaluation and mitigation strategy (REMS). Mifepristone is safe. Robust clinical evidence backed by decades of use by millions of patients has proven incontrovertibly that mifepristone is safe and effective for use in medication abortion and miscarriage management. Complications associated with mifepristone are exceedingly rare, minor, and easily treatable. https://lnkd.in/gkR3yptW #bias #doctor #nurse #administrator #worldhealth #medicine #abortion #mifepristone #cytotec #misoprostol #medical #equalaccess #access #preventivehealth #preventivemedicine #obgyn #medicina #healthcareresearch #care #health #healthcare #healthcaremanagement #management #publichealth #implicit #salud #saludpublica #legistlation #disparity #disparities #healthdisparities #inequity #inequality #inequities #inequalities #implicitbias #birthcontrol #reproductiverights American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) FDA
