🌟 Reflections from the SCRI Clinical Trials Symposium 🌟 Last week, I attended the #SCRI2024 symposium organized by Singapore Clinical Research Institute (SCRI). The event featured visionary leaders like Sir Jeremy Farrar, Chief Scientist at the WHO, Prof Kenneth Mak, Director-General of Health at Singapore's Ministry of Health, Adj A/Prof Danny Soon, CEO of CRIS, and many others. Additionally, experts from renowned companies such as Novartis, Takeda, and Duke-NUS Medical School discussed the future of clinical research and its profound impact on healthcare. Here is quick summary of some important innovations: 💻 Digital Trials: Embracing digital technologies to streamline data collection and analysis, making trials more efficient and accurate. 🏠 Decentralized Trials: Bringing clinical trials directly to patients' homes, enhancing accessibility and convenience. Sino-EU personalised medicines project, Europe bridging a data divide The project was set up as part of a concerted larger effort by the European Commission to increase international collaboration to promote personalised medicine and was devised to engage China in the International Consortium on Personalised Medicine [ICPerMed] - an EU Member States driven initiative and advance the implementation of the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda on personalised medicine. The main outcomes of the project can be summarized as obtaining a clearer overview of the research and innovation landscape on personalised medicine in China; a better understanding of the main opportunities and hurdles in the development and implementation of personalised medicine cooperation; as well as establishing contacts with the key stakeholders, with whom we have initiated a science, technology and policy dialogue. “Last year showed that the digital literacy of healthcare professionals, patients and all the key pharma stakeholders is growing,” says Donatello Crocetta MD MBA, Head of Global Rare & Rare Medical, Rare Disease at UCB. He is in a unique position to know this because “Working in rare diseases is always challenging, often because most of physicians have seen only few of these patients and therefore can have limited knowledge of the disease.” SciencePOD, as a Media Partners with #Pharma2024, had the opportunity to speak with Crocetta in advance of his panel discussion entitled “Great expectations, greater delivery: Configure innovative customer-facing roles to keep up with HCPs dynamic needs.” The forthcoming Reuters Events Pharma 2024 will run from 16–18 April at the CCIB, Barcelona, Spain. Crocetta believes that “Now, the discussion is more on what experience we want to provide the physicians and the stakeholder community with digital tools and leveraging the power of artificial intelligence." He adds: “We need to make sure that the #digital experience becomes much better than the face-to-face experience that they were used to. They should complement one another; digital tools should not just mirror what you get from face-to-face meetings.” And UCB has been an early adopter of technology such as augmented reality using smart glasses, for example, to mirror the experience of patients affected by Myasthenia Gravis. Crocetta explains: “This allows users to put themselves in the shoes of a patient and experience the daily challenges they face when doing normal daily activities.” He adds: “We are using this with healthcare professionals and for our own internal education to raise awareness on the patient experience.” UCB has worked closely with experts to build a scientific platform called Rare Disease Connect in Neurology (RDCN) which brings together all the critical stakeholders in the disease management: physicians, nurses, patient organisations.
