Prithvi Mela is back with a bang in 2023, spanning 3 new cities across India. With the aim of promoting sustainable practises, the IP not only promotes local businesses and craftsmen but is dedicated to giving back to the environment too. This year’s theme was ‘Sustainability Stitch’; and the preparations started with a pre-event engagement: Quilt of Love where employees came together to stictch patches of fabrics which was ultimately transformed into a huge quilt which acted as the stage backdrop in all 3 cities. Each city includes 10 flea-style sustainable booths - selling everything from accessories, clothing and home decor to bamboo products, stationery and more, as well as various engagement activities and panel discussions! The first city was Chennai, with engagements like Step Up, Word Cloud, Bio Enzyme, Climate Fresk & Doodle Art. An Upcycle-Recycle station unique to Chennai was also installed. Our panelists in this city included Dominique who’s the cofounder of Oh Scrap Madras, Ann who’s the founder of India Wasted and Laure Huys, facilitator of Auroville Green Practices who gave us valuable insights into redefining consumption - delving into consumerism and sustainability. In Bangalore, where the monsoon season brings near-daily showers, the allure of escaping to the mountains to experience breathtaking views is a common yearning. One weekend, my cousin, a tech support engineer at a prominent IT firm, invited me to join him and his family on a road trip to a destination called Markandeya. Despite my initial reluctance due to upcoming exams, we prepared for the journey, which was only about 70 kms from Bangalore. We packed our bags and set off, eager for what promised to be an unforgettable adventure. However, just 30 kms from our home, we came across a signpost that read “Heaven Awaits – Chikkamagaluru.” My cousin’s wife quickly checked the location on her phone and was enchanted by the stunning images and reviews she saw online. She also recalled, quite coincidentally, that her grandfather was in Chikkamagaluru to sell one of his villas, and the chance to reunite with him presented a valuable opportunity alongside our quest for mountain views. Although my cousin was initially hesitant to deviate from our itinerary, he ultimately realised that arguing with his wife was futile and we decided to make a detour in our journey, After hours of driving, we arrived at our destination and were warmly welcomed by her grandfather. The experience in the lush green mountains was enriching, and we savoured a delightful family dinner together, featuring exquisite local cuisine. The following day, we explored several attractions before returning home early in the morning. This experience illustrates a key principle of brand management: the power of perception.
