Energy poverty is a global challenge. In this hybrid seminar - available to attend in-person and online - Dr Oscar Sanchez Santillan looks at the role social media analysis can play to help identify, monitor and tackle the issue. The presentation will examine Social Sensing (SoS), the analysis of user-generated data from social media, as a support mechanism to tackle the issue. The seminar will discuss how SoS can be used to create complementary (almost) real-time energy poverty indicators for detecting and monitoring the lived experiences of those in energy poverty and patterns that emerge during cost-of-living crises. Downsides, challenges and opportunities will be also discussed, as well as some preliminary results of an ongoing social media data analysis and the link between SoS and energy literacy issues. Last year, Ute Dubois and I worked together to assess the specifics of energy poverty in Georgia. We tried to understand: - What are the determinants of energy poverty in Georgia? -What are the consequences of energy poverty in Georgia? - How could methods to analyze energy poverty in Georgia be adapted to better take into account the specificities of the country? Our study primarily relied on desk research, drawing information from official reports, academic and grey literature, and statistical data. It can be concluded that not only that the vulnerability of the Georgian population to energy poverty is high, but also that the characteristics of energy poverty in Georgia are different from what is generally known about energy poverty in Western Europe. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened energy poverty in the US, especially for lower-income households, as financial indicators alone do not capture the full extent of the issue. A new study with CGS Senior Fellow Lucy Qiu surveyed residents in two cities to understand energy behaviors, finding that lower-income households were disproportionately affected. The study highlights the need for targeted assistance and understanding local energy needs to address energy poverty effectively. https://lnkd.in/e3dYQ8Wa

Check out the latest research from Abhilash Kantamneni on energy poverty, housing and vulnerability in Canada.
Energy poverty and housing vulnerability are critical issues affecting many Canadians. While there is significant international literature and emerging Canadian literature on energy poverty's impacts, the links between energy poverty and housing vulnerability are not well understood. The goal of this literature review and annotated bibliography by our Research Manager Abhilash Kantamneni is to bring research on energy poverty and housing vulnerability into closer dialogue by exploring the intersection between these issues, particularly in the Canadian context. WEBINAR | ADDRESSING ENERGY POVERTY | 29 MAY '24 I am pleased to announce that I will be hosting a webinar on 'Addressing Energy Poverty' on 29th May '24 and will be in conversation with Liby Johnson, Executive Director, Gram Vikas and Eshaan Patheria, Doctoral candidate at Caltech. The objectives of this webinar are two-fold. The first is to understand the web of factors that contribute to the global energy poverty phenomenon while the second is to apply learnings from Liby and Eshaan's work in tackling the global energy poverty challenge. We will focus not only on 'what' systemic shifts are needed but also on 'how' shifts should be introduced. This can help remove blind spots in the current narrative and open doors to opportunities that may be hidden from view. While we will have an invigorating discussion, what lies at the heart of this webinar is a beautiful story of courageous heart action. Make sure to be there! Please use the link below to learn more about this webinar or to register https://lnkd.in/dvBk2wFw #EnergyPoverty #MultiSectorPartnerships #SDG7 #SystemsChange

DID YOU KNOW? "Energy poverty is not only limited to the developing world; it is present across all societies. In fact, energy poverty is growing fastest in high-income countries where policy choices are driving up the local cost of energy. In 2020, 27% of U.S. households had trouble affording their energy needs, and 10% of Americans reported keeping their homes at unhealthy temperatures to balance their budgets. This in the world’s wealthiest country!" Read more on the future of energy poverty on page 85 of our Bettering Human Lives Report, issued February 2024. https://lnkd.in/g-g3EMmS
