Promoting the use of big data and innovative methods to improve social, economic and environmental well-being in cities

About us

The Urban Big Data Centre (UBDC) is a research centre that is jointly funded by the ESRC and the University of Glasgow. We aim to promote the use of big data and innovative methods to improve social, economic and environmental well-being in cities. We deliver analyses which have demonstrable impacts on public policy, society and industry. We do this by publishing world-leading research in the social sciences and other disciplines, but also by working closely with partners from government, industry and the third sector. We work to enhance the quality of urban big data and methods for urban analytics to support the work of others. But we also provide critical analysis of the value of these for understanding urban conditions. We offer a centre-of-excellence for teaching and capacity building in urban big data and urban analytics. You can study with us as a Masters or PhD student. UBDC was established in 2014. In its first phase - up to January 2019 - it was funded by the ESRC as part of the UK’s national data infrastructure, focussed on developing big data resources and urban analytics methods for a wide range of potential applications and users. UBDC is now jointly funded by the ESRC and the University of Glasgow as a research centre up to January 2024. As well as continuing to pioneer the science of urban analytics, the Centre will work closely with government and industry to ensure the benefits of that research are maximised.

Multiple data sources, tools and policy demands are increasing pressures on transport planners and researchers. In this hybrid UBDC webinar at 3pm on Thursday 10 October, Robin Lovelace - Professor of Transport Data Science at the Leeds Institute for Transport Studies and Head of Data Science at the UK government agency, Active Travel England - examines how best to meet these demands and help future-proof transport planning. He will map out the current landscape of open tools for transport planning, distinguish between open source and open access models, and demonstrate how reproducibility is the key, not just for research, but also for socially sustainable, high impact transport planning practice. Drawing on his experience developing, deploying and collaborating on tools such as the Propensity to Cycle Tool for England and Wales, the Network Planning Tool for Scotland and the Biclar tool for Portugal, Prof Lovelace aims to generate debate and provide insight into how the transport planning could develop as the data revolution accelerates. Colombia nos Une (Colombia Unites Us), the Glasgow Latin American Research Network (GLARN) and the Urban Big Data Centre are proud to present Colombia in Dialogue. Join us at the Advanced Research Centre of the University of Glasgow (Studio 2) on Tuesday 8 October at 3pm for a conversation about biodiversity, environmental justice, and peace in Colombia. Our panel brings Colombian speakers from civil society and academia to exchange ideas and perspectives related to the protection of biodiversity, leveraging environmental justice with local communities, and peacebuilding in Colombia. We will also enjoy a live audio-visual synthesis performance that creates an organic, powerful, and ever-evolving dialogue that explores themes of nature, climate change, and pressing global issues and includes research outcomes from community-based research projects in Colombia. With the call for expressions of interest open until Monday 16 September, Dr. Sam Grant, Research Associate at UBDC, highlights existing and potential applications for the rich Adzuna dataset to provide fresh insights into UK economic and #LabourMarket trends. The Adzuna dataset offers a rare opportunity for researchers to explore trends in the UK labour market through a large-scale, high-frequency dataset. Comprising over 350 million job advertisements collected through weekly snapshots of Adzuna.co.uk, the UK’s most popular job search engine, this dataset provides detailed insights into how the world of work is evolving. 🚦 Our #UrbanTraffic study reveals fresh insights into how #COVID19 dramatically changed travel behaviours. We examine the relationship between traffic flows, urban infrastructure, and socio-demographic indicators before, during and after the pandemic. 🚗 Among our key findings: areas with more young and white residents see higher traffic; green spaces correlate with lower traffic; major roads between cities and towns experience heavier flows; and the effects of green spaces on traffic vary by distance. 🚴♂️ COVID-19 also led to a significant reduction in long-distance travel, opening up opportunities for encouraging more active travel which could help shape future urban planning. #UrbanData #TrafficAnalysis #COVID19Impact #ActiveTravel 🚶♀️ Access the full paper here: https://ow.ly/Nfxj50Tavkn
