"There are solutions at every geographic scale...From a city block to a whole city.” Atmospheric rivers are beginning to hit the west coast this week, and the need for coastal cities to accelerate adaptation and resilience efforts has never been more clear. Our co-founder Ayana Elizabeth Johnson spoke with The New York Times about our Climate Readiness Framework for Coastal Cities, and how coastal cities can act now to implement solutions. Ah, summer: The annual breaking of high-temperature records and reminder that climate change is already here. Wouldn't it be great to escape all that? Well, some cities are inviting you to do just that. These so-called "climate havens" have become a marketing ploy for a number of U.S. cities, who argue that they can shelter Americans from the worst of climate change. For BBC, I talked to the experts to figure out: Can "climate haven" cities really protect us? Are they actually a climate solution? Read on below! #climate #sustainability #climatehaven
US cities are advertising themselves as 'climate havens'. But can they actually protect residents from extreme weather?

Coastal communities are on the frontlines of climate change impacts. They need to upgrade infrastructure not built for sea level rise and protect coastal nature resources, plus they need the capacity to plan for greater coastal resilience. 🌊 One of the most popular programs under the #InflationReductionAct, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Resilience Regional Challenge recently awarded $575 million to 19 projects, and half of the selected projects are represented by #AmericaIsAllIn members! NOAA’s Climate Resilience Regional Challenge focuses on holistic, collaborative projects that build #ClimateReadyCoasts and increase the resilience of coastal communities to extreme weather and other climate change impacts. Urban river governance: A pathway for cities to achieve climate goals Water resilience has become a key agenda for cities today, as most natural and climate-change induced disasters usually manifest through water, such as floods, storms, water-borne disease outbreaks, and droughts. Amid the climate change impacts, it is necessary that cities prioritize on improving the governance of its freshwater systems, including its rivers. https://lnkd.in/dcSDiG9s

Recommend checking out this op-ed in the Anchorage Daily News from NOAA Administrator Rick Sprinad on the IRA's coastal resilience investments. Just last month, NOAA awarded $78.9 million to Alaskan communities through the Climate Resilience Regional Challenge, which supports community-led climate resilience projects across the country. As Dr. Spinrad critically notes: “communities’ demand for funding was 28 times what we could offer.” 🤯 More severe storms ➕ rising seas 🟰 need for comprehensive adaptation of our coasts to address both short- and long-term threats to coastal communities, ecosystems, and infrastructure. The IRA coastal resilience investments are getting to work–but this is not the end of this climate story for people living in coastal areas. Congress needs to step up with long-term, sustained investments for the 40% of Americans who live in coastal counties across the country. #OceanClimateAction https://lnkd.in/gNAeWH9M

🚨 The Mercury News: In the face of worsening climate impacts, California communities need stable funding for clean air and drinking water, wildfire mitigation, and wildlife protection. Governor Newsom is proposing billions in cuts to climate programs, but bond proposals from Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia and Senator Ben Allen would invest $15 billion in climate resilience.
