One of my new favorite podcasts is Future Forward Cities, hosted by my friend Seyi Fabode and his co-host Reza Shirazi, and I think this episode on charter cities has been the best one so far. I remember first hearing about the idea of a charter city back before I ever worked in energy & smart cities. I thought it was a cool idea, but even then wondered if it was realistic. Fast forward a decade spent researching and working in some of the systems that comprise cities, like energy and transportation, and it seems obvious that charter cities are more of a billionaire's idea of utopia than places for all residents to thrive.  For all the intricacies and inner workings of cities, it's the people that really makes them organic. Seyi and Reza talk about several reasons why charter cities are not a good idea, but it ultimately comes down to a lack of community agency. A new scientific study released today has found that the fishing practice of bottom trawling (dragging heavy fishing nets – some as large as 10 747 jets – across the ocean floor) not only destroys nature and biodiversity but also has a huge impact on our climate. Between 1996-2020, it's estimated the total CO₂ released from trawling to the atmosphere to be 8.5 to 9.2bn tonnes. The scientists described trawling as “marine deforestation”. There's still a huge amount of global leaders who dismiss the scientific evidence of climate change. It's like blindly self-medicating rather than following treatment from a doctor's assessment... Planet Possible's latest episode features Chris Packham live from the ESS Expo. It's shocking to hear that the original aim of the the 2015 Paris Agreement, set at limiting global temperature rises to 1.5 degrees, is now closer to 2 degrees realistically. But it's not all hopeless... The government's report on the UK carbon levy states: "Goods imported into the UK from countries with a lower or no carbon price will have to pay a levy by 2027, ensuring products from overseas face a comparable carbon price to those produced in the UK... "The UK has a track record to be proud of on decarbonisation. We were the first major economy to legislate for net zero and we are reducing our emissions faster than any other G7 country." The UK has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 28% by 2035 and moving to Net Zero by 2050. Transport, in particular cars, is the largest source of emissions (accounting for 27%). Certain decarbonisation targets, such as transition to electric cars, are going to be a struggle given the sheer cost of infrastructure required. The fact that the target is so vague:  "280 to 480,000 public chargepoints by 2030", according to Competition & Markets Authority, suggests that there's so many variables... Public belief we can meet these ambitious targets is low. Transport steals the headlines, but there's other wins to be had... Overlooked areas such as upgrading water infrastructure hold the key to generating high-quality jobs, increase the competitiveness of businesses, and lead to a significant injection of economic activity throughout the nation. These are the stories we can benefit from telling: stories of climate healing, awareness and possibility. Carbon is one linear measure that gets way too much focus. Let's take a systems perspective in our connection with the biosphere.

Market-based natural climate solutions often reduce emissions by reducing poverty to reduce deforestation and degradation (REDD). They reduce poverty by jump-starting alternative livelihoods -- from beekeeping to fish farming to ecotourism -- and by subsidizing education. These activities aren't additional to the emission reductions. They're what cause the emission reductions. So, why do we call them "co-benefits"? For Geoff Mwangi, they're not.
