That's a wrap on National Ocean Month, and UOL has been busy! A few of our highlights: 1. 🤝 We co-hosted Upwell: A Wave of Ocean Justice with Center for American Progress and Azul, where Ayana Elizabeth Johnson moderated a panel on climate-driven relocation. Watch a recording of the conversation: https://lnkd.in/eSkHjg3i 2. 🗣 We joined Sea Change, a podcast produced by WWNO New Orleans Public Radio and WRKF Baton Rouge Public Radio, to discuss the importance of climate-ready coastal cities. Listen to the episode: https://lnkd.in/eUvpQB4M 3. 👩💻 We launched our resource hub, an open-access tool with hundreds of resources to support climate adaptation in coastal cities. Explore the hub: https://lnkd.in/dBmaz6GR 4. ✍ Our Policy Director, Alexandra (Ali) C., contributed to "Turning the Tide: Biden Administration Leadership on Ocean Climate Action & Recommended Next Steps", in collaboration with 60+ environmental organizations and ocean advocacy groups. WWF-Australia has long had a vision to rehabilitate, restore and create conditions for climate resilience, and this was catalysed by the bushfire tragedy of 2019-2020. In 2022, we collaborated with WWF-Australia to co-create and deliver three Local Learning Labs to catalyse regenerative capabilities in place. Find out how we bolstered the regenerative capabilities of regional communities in NSW, SA and VIC: https://bit.ly/3TAvwFP

🚨 Community Input Needed 🚨 Last summer, the EPA awarded a planning grant from the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) Program to the State of New Mexico Environment Department to support the State in creating two climate action plans (a priority plan and a comprehensive plan) for implementing effective greenhouse gas reduction strategies while ensuring the benefits of these actions are delivered to New Mexicans, especially Low Income or Disadvantaged Communities. As these plans are being developed, we want to help make sure that they are reflective of our values, culture, and priorities. That is why we’re asking you to take our survey by February 10th CPRG funding for New Mexico can help our communities with things like training and workforce development opportunities, clean energy development and energy efficiency, clean transit, and much more. A year ago today, the Biden Administration released the first ever Ocean Climate Action Plan; an ambitious effort to advance urgent actions that address the climate crisis and recognize the role our ocean plays in climate solutions. Thanks to the Administration and the dogged efforts of groups like Center for American Progress, Ocean Defense Initiative out of Resources Legacy Fund, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), National Ocean Protection Coalition, Aquarium Conservation Partnership, Urban Ocean Lab, and truly countless others, we've seen massive progress on #OceanClimateAction like: - The release of an Ocean Justice Strategy to integrate environmental justice principles into Federal government ocean activities - Scaling up of responsible offshore wind development - Promotion of coastal resiliency efforts with over $3 billion going to coastal communities to prepare for climate impacts - Increased funding for U.S. fisheries to improve climate resiliency measures ...and so much more! If all of this can be achieved in ONE year, imagine what sustained, concentrated federal investment and intentional public engagement efforts can do for our oceans, blue economy, coastal communities, and climate resiliency efforts. Let's keep the momentum up this election year!

Protecting the broader oceans from commercial exploitation is a huge step to restoring the oceans as they once were. Healthy oceans help stabilize the climate, restore ecological cycles and replenish our near coast populations of fish that millions of poorer people on our planet rely on for their food. This is also a very big step in reaching the 30/30 goals of the EO Wilson Foundation. https://lnkd.in/eQChptXr https://lnkd.in/erHkAgsQ

Best of Both Words: Indigenous Knowledge and Western Science to Better Manage our Forests.
Cristina Eisenberg, Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence, Maybelle Clark Macdonald Director of Tribal Initiatives in Natural Resources, was interviewed on Oregon On the Record about managing forests for the future. She says, "We need to bring together Indigenous Knowledge with the best western science and to build partnerships across cultures to restore resilience in these forests to climate change." This is called eco-cultural restoration, or two-eyed seeing, because it combines two different world views. Listen to the full interview to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gzzb6Jvt

This summer, a landmark climate settlement was reached in the case Navahine F. v Hawai’i Department of Transportation. In the first youth-led constitutional climate case, the plaintiffs sought to hold the transportation sector accountable for violating their right to a clean and healthful environment. Our latest blog explores the context for the case, the details of the historic settlement, and how climate science was incorporated throughout. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eBtrtXgA
