Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Events Management & BA (Hons) Tourism Management, Lecturer at University of the West of Scotland
Glasgow 2026 👏🏻 Excellent news for Glasgow and Scotland! I'm a proud supporter of Events for social change and opportunity. In Scotland, we have a world-leading events sector, this is brilliant for our University of the West of Scotland students and a boost to develop much-needed skills in the events industry. My ongoing research, a 10-year comparative study on social legacy through volunteering, already shows lasting positive effects from Glasgow 2014: ✔️ Improved social capital ✔️ Over 60% of participants volunteered for 6 months or less and still feel the benefits 10 years later ✔️ 74% of Games volunteers were already volunteering, and nearly 60% have increased their volunteer time in the past decade ✔️ Key well-being indicators like 'confidence', 'feeling good about myself', and 'feeling useful' have stayed significantly improved since Glasgow 2014 More to come! #eventmanagement #eventlegacy #Glasgow2014 #Glasgow2026 #socialimpact #sociallegacy CCSE UWS

Senior Manager, Wynford | Past President SITE Canada | Professor & Program Advisory Board member at Durham & Centennial Colleges
One of the many benefits to volunteering for SITE Canada is being part of a community of like-minded people. I love talking shop, discussing solutions to solve industry opportunities. And today I got to do that with Annette Gregg, CMM MBA, Kari Lynn Larsen, Gisele Robert and Janet Johnson Cuffie, CIS. #eventprofs #incentivetravel #sitecanada #siteglobal #siteunite

I'm feeling so pumped after just delivering a Optimising Community Events webinar to over 270 registered (and approximately 130 live) participants from across regional and rural Australia!! Based on this great engaging session it is obvious that volunteering and finances remain two key challenges for events. Participants also raised some other interesting trends and challenges that they are experiencing… - Lack of appreciation for how much is involved (and how much it costs) to plan and deliver events - People are not attending as many events post COVID – they are taking a slower pace to life - Less $$ to spend attending events due to cost of living - Challenges of increasing regulations and difficulties in affording or getting insurance - Understanding exactly what a community wants in the event space - Coming up with new ideas to keep an event fresh and different in a competitive environment Cath and I (Linda) will do a brief article each Thursday for the next 6 weeks to address each of these points and offer insights. Watch this space!!! Thank you to FRRR (Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal) for trusting in us to design and facilitate this webinar and a big shout out to everyone that joined us over lunch today, we love nothing more than to share our knowledge and experience with events across regional Australia.

re: BRTA Sheffield Forum – Saturday, 29 June 2024 14.00-16.00 Venue: Benjamin Huntsman, 12-18 Cambridge Street, Sheffield, South Yorks. S1 4UD Venue Website: https://lnkd.in/dcw9xKea Venue Phone: 0114-263-9500 A reminder that people are welcome to attend our forum (agenda attached) and details via https://lnkd.in/d7ARn7y Please bring a friend and introduce them to BRTA. Likewise, engage with the agenda and contribute positively. BRTA has had some success with our Forums this summer so far and will do more if and as and when we get more members, volunteers and income to pay for outlay. So if you want more and better, be prepared to be part of the solution and not the problem! It may be we have to prioritise, but in the interim we also need to flag up schemes, call for route protections and study to make the case or find alternatives too. It is weird that Colne - Skipton has Sunak's support and ticked all the boxes, but was not 'permitted' this side of the General Election? All parties need to be challenged and questioned as to what they would do if elected to power and introduced to schemes we know of or deficits of rails and to be courted to get on board. People often talk about a 'north-south' divide in funding and investment, whereas BRTA's aspiration is to serve England, Scotland and Wales with more and better local rail solutions and reopenings via local people x anywhere nationwide to roll up their sleeves, make common cause with us and help usher schemes along pro-affirmatively. Let others write them off if they have nothing better to do, but our nationwide rail network and ensuring it is robust and adequate is exactly what we need to direct councils, tiers of quangos and Government of any shade to take more interest in and ensure a system which delivers over the course of a Parliament/in a timely manner and not the 37 years for getting started with an east-west Oxford-Bedford-Cambridge rail link! Lessons must be learnt and membership and volunteering in BRTA, is a key aspect to ensuring more and better. Don Valley Railway, Woodhead rebuild, Sheffield and Manchester orbitals with Parkway Stations, York-Beverley, Colne-Skipton, Leeds-Northallerton via Ripon, Scarborough-Whitby via Robin Hoods Bay, Matlock-Buxton/Chinley (Derby/East Midlands-Manchester/North West) and select others like Keswick all need on-going advocacy, team building and support. #dft #networkrail #BRTARail #transport #logistics #rail #railways #reopenigns #event #sheffield #manchester #hull #york #liverpool #derby #pennines

Have you ever wondered which National Society in the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC network has the most volunteers? An interesting way we can explore volunteer numbers is to consider what percentage of that country's population participates as a volunteer in the Red Cross and Red Crescent. 📊 You might be surprised at the answer to this question: https://lnkd.in/e_mtTyfS Every day, volunteers bring an extraordinary contribution to the world. They are at the core of the purpose and model of our organisation, which is why we love thinking and talking about volunteering so much. These days volunteering patterns seem to be changing so much, how do you think it is shifting? Tell us your thoughts by taking the IFRC Strategy 2030 Midterm Review & Forecast today : https://lnkd.in/exPKnVfx. #IFRC #Strategy2030

Head of Trade Relations @ Bench Africa || Experienced Sales Leader, Account management, Partner Relations & All-round Team Player! ||
RESPONSIBLE GIVING IN AFRICA At Bench Africa, we’re often asked by clients and travel agents what they can take to Africa to improve the lives of those in need and to make a positive impact on the local communities they will visit. We tend to think about packing pencils and notebooks, or toothpaste and toothbrushes. As I learnt last year in Zambia from Mfuwe Lodge Guest Manager, the quantities required to ‘do good’ are generally more than the packing space we have available in our luggage. We can in fact create other issues if, for example, we don’t carry enough pencils to go around a class of school children. This is where the incredible Pack for a Purpose initiative comes in, connecting travellers with specific requirements identified by local projects. Their website provides a platform for our African travel partners to list required items and guidelines for responsible giving, from stationery supplies and sports items, to linens and sanitary products. Travellers then simply drop off the supplies at the participating accommodation where they will stay, and the donated goods are distributed when there is enough to satisfy the project’s needs. Visit their website now and share with any clients booked to visit Africa soon. A small act of generosity can make a significant difference.
