Let’s all agree that everyone deserves a well designed living arrangement that suits them. Well designed because great design inspires you, poor design really is unfair. We are humans and being in beautiful spaces matters. A living arrangement that suits them does not always mean a small apartment. Sometimes that is group living or multigenerational housing. Yes we need more housing (tons of it) but let’s not mindlessly build “doors” either.

This year, we have decided to begin showcasing our work across a variety of social media platforms, including LinkedIn. As we move forward, we will begin to demonstrate a variety of projects, old and new, with insights beyond the end results. Please let us know if there are any specific types of content that you would like to see too. New London Road was a project that had specific heritage requirements; read below to see how we accomplished the build. When tasked with transforming this beautiful Edwardian Villa into a modern family home, we were inspired by the challenge and the owners’ passion. To protect its beauty, charm and heritage values our approach had to be sensitive yet innovative. The existing layout had seen years of ad hoc upgrades and extensions, creating dysfunctional, unsociable spaces with poor connections to one another and the outside. By removing some of these outdated additions we were able to extend the building to create the contemporary kitchen, dining, and family space which was desperately needed. This change not only modernised the home but also allowed the elegant formal reception rooms in the original building to retain their classic character. The remaining dysfunctional areas were reconfigured to provide practical and functional spaces including a boot room, utility room, and a leisure wing featuring a gym and spa. A contemporary first-floor side extension was introduced and the loft space was converted to provide additional bedrooms, while the existing bedrooms were redesigned to include dressing rooms and en-suites. The contemporary design and materials of the side extension create a contrast with the villa's traditional style, a contrast that was endorsed by the Local Authority Heritage officer. This approach preserves the heritage asset's hierarchy while incorporating a clear and authentic contemporary addition. The result is a seamless integration of old and new, creating a luxurious, functional, and character-filled home that honours its historical roots while meeting the demands of modern living. #EdwardianVilla #Renovation #Architecture #ModernLiving #LuxuryHomes #HeritageConservation #DesignInnovation #ArchitecturalTransformation

This is what it takes to respond to the #climateemergency and build beyond regulations: thirty site visits, one appeal, 134 issues of information, countless emails, a fantastic client, a steep learning curve and a lot of professional fun. This project is a huge achievement for the brilliant team at Collective Works, and was only possible with an ambitious and collaborative consultant, contractor and client team. The Dezeen article shows the glossy pictures, and we will share more technical information as we continue to monitor performance. As we have been pushing for #RIBA2030 and #netzero for years, this first completed #deepretrofit project is a reason to celebrate. A small (but important) step for the London housing stock, and a giant leap for us. What a pleasure and privilege it was to spend a week living in Le Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse, Unité d'habitation in Marseille. This Modernist development was completed in 1952, and has 337 flats with 23 different layouts across 12 storeys. The building has a roof top nursery school with a paddling pool, running track and public facilities. On the 3rd and 4th floors are shops, offices, a café and a hotel. There are many lessons to be learnt from this development, including high density housing, public access, inspiration and how to make beautiful broad corridors (or streets in the sky) dark and uninviting. The flats are beautiful, light and spacious – and quiet, being lead-lined. My big take-away from living here was just how well integrated and happy people were. Every time we took the lift or met someone in a corridor, we were greeted with a smile and a “bonjour” or “au revoir”. #architecture #design #urbanliving #highdensity #housingforall #familyhousing #inspiration
