Looking forward to this discussion on the pivotal role of nuclear energy in deep decarbonization. I'll be joining a line up of government and industry heavyweights including Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Sama Bilbao y Leon, Stefano Buono, and Rumina Velshi P.Eng, ICD.D. Nuclear is a key topic for the G7 as Canada and our allies make decisions to ensure long-term energy security on the path to net zero.

I am looking forward to being in Turin next week during the G7 Energy Ministerial. Some of the points I will be making are about the importance of safe, resilient, and secure supply chains that are essential for major capital projects, which includes close coordination with like-minded allies, as well as best practices on how countries are building out capacity and regulatory infrastructure.

Shuttered nuclear reactors in the United States may be slated for revival in upcoming years. This past March, the Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan was given the green light to reopen, with plans for the plant to begin producing power in late 2025. Great to see the US take a step toward embracing nuclear energy as one source of clean, reliable energy. Now is Canada’s time to embrace CANDU nuclear technology to help support the country’s own clean energy targets. I appreciated the opportunity to testify before the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources at a hearing focused on the "Opportunities and Challenges Associated with Advanced Nuclear Reactor Commercialization." A special thank you to Chairman Sen Joe Manchin, Ranking Member Sen. John Barrasso and the entire committee for the invitation. Nuclear energy, especially advanced small modular nuclear is a long-term, viable source of low carbon-emitting sustainable energy that offers the advantage of baseload replacement and can complement renewable energy. For industrial users of power and steam, advanced small modular nuclear represents a tremendous opportunity to decarbonize manufacturing. Industry must seize the opportunities arising from a global change in the perception of nuclear energy, a panel session agreed during a side event at the World Energy Congress 2024. Since commercial nuclear power began in the mid-20th century, it has produced a significant amount of electricity worldwide. As of January 2022, nuclear power has generated over 27,000 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity globally. This number continues to grow as more nuclear power plants come online and operate over time. For reference the United States (the second largest consumer of electricity behind China) consumes roughly 4,000 terawatt-hours per year.

"We are seeing a very important sea-change in the way nuclear energy is being perceived at a global level. Countries that perhaps a few years ago were not considering nuclear energy, they definitely are taking a second look at it. Why? Well, firstly, because many of these countries actually got their calculators out and realized that there's just simply no other way to meet their Paris Agreement goals in a way that is cost-effective and, very importantly, equitable. So that's put nuclear energy back on the map and, of course, issues such as energy security and energy independence are also very important," World Nuclear Association Director General Sama Bilbao y León.
