Rockets: The Challenges of Upper Stages Second stage rockets are the ones that operate the longest and introduce the most variability in environmental conditions to the structures, systems and components. Valves can malfunction, contactors and relays can freeze, a vacuum is encountered for the first time, temperatures run to the extrema causing contraction of materials, etc., etc. I'm hopeful that all rocket engineers and manufacturers can overcome the challenges of stage 2 rockets.
