This past weekend we held one of our applicant open days on campus, with guests coming from across the UK to learn more about who we are, what we do, and to decide whether we are the right university for them. During our welcome talk at the start of the day our head of department Ruth (pictured top left), revealed that there are over 160 universities in the UK, with ~ 125-130 of those offering Sport and Physical Activity degrees. With so many now providers now offering courses, it can be difficult to decide which to study and where to go, importantly. It's a difficult decision to make and a stressful time for prospective students, who need to make their choice alongside studying for their exams. It's a challenging time for parents and families too, who only what the best for their young people and need to be there to support their loved ones as they make their decisions. For these reasons we take our open days very seriously, and offer our guests the opportunity to experience what our applied curriculum is like, with taster sessions and activities delivered by our expert staff, within our on-site facilities, and sometimes using equipment (see the images below, which also feature a specialist obesity suit and timing gates). These activities feature alongside opportunities to speak to our staff and students about our courses as well as university life more broadly. As an organisation we invest heavily in our value-added offer, with opportunities to develop skills, experiences and networks through learning and teaching both inside and outside of the classroom. Our ambition is to be the world's leading applied university, with transforming lives being our core objective, but also our philosophy. As much as anything, open days are a small window into our department, looking from the outside in. But, they're also an opportunity for us to help our prospective students (and their families) make the decision that's right for them, by offering information, support and guidance. For us, the concept of transforming lives starts before our students arrive, and for some, open days are perhaps just the beginning of that journey with us.

The transition from high school to college can be downright daunting 😱 That’s why we spend time throughout scholar’s entire senior year helping to prepare them for what’s to come. The right college is different for every scholar, and there are so many factors to consider. It’s so much more than ‘I got accepted, so I’ll attend!” Throughout senior year, we help scholars identify schools that would be a good fit for them. We address the academic, financial and social aspects to be sure that it’s a school where a scholar will thrive in all areas — it’s not just about the grades. Once we’ve narrowed the options, we help facilitate all the logistics that come next. 🏫 Campus tours: to be sure the factors we like on paper actually resonate in real life. 🗃️ Applications: the application process for many schools often involves many steps and multiple deadlines — we help keep scholars on top of all the moving parts. 💰Finances: our volunteers and staff help guide scholars through financial aid applications and explore scholarship options. The goal of our senior BootCamp is to make our scholars’ transition to college as smooth as possible and to help alleviate some stresses of the process so that they can fully engage and enjoy the next phase of their lives. L&D Partner for HR Consultants⭐Fractional L&D Specialist for SMEs⭐Effective and Engaging Learning Solutions⭐Psychometrics 🔵🟢🟡🔴⭐Retained or PAYG Services
Even though I have not been a teacher for many years, I still feel a strong connection to the cycle of the educational year. We are now in August. When I was a teacher, August meant that my summer break was coming to an end. You see, as a college lecturer, we used to finish for our summer break much earlier than schools do (Usually end of June/early July). August would be busy with enrolments, especially after GCSE results came out. August would involve catching up with colleagues, new timetables, new lessons to plan and around 200 new names to learn! So it's no surprise that now I am using August as a time to plan, to think, to refresh and renew ready for September. If you have L&D projects that you are putting off, don't know how to start, or need help to get ready for September, then I can help you with: ✅1:1 Power Hours ✅1:1 Co-creation sessions Oh, you've got 4 weeks and two days before I go on holiday so if you need that support, probably best to get in touch 😊 #planning #newstart #preparation
