Did you know you can opt out of facial recognition scans at the airport? To decline simply tell the officer, "I’d like to opt out of biometrics.“ Campaigns are raising awareness about this right. Remember, you can choose the standard verification process the next time you fly. http://spr.ly/6048Yms1M #facialrecognition | #KnowYourRights | #TravelTips | #biometrics

New Blog Post! Megan Apostolides discusses how for centuries, the passports has served as our gateway to the world, acting as a physical manifestation of identity and authorization for international travel. However, with the development of biometric technology, there may be a new era where passports might become the relics of the past. Fingerprint scans, facial recognition, and other unique identifiers are increasingly entering the realm of border control, sparking both excitement and concerns about the future of secure travel and personal privacy. https://lnkd.in/efnbtV9E

I was recently quoted in a The New York Times article, “Will Passports Be Replaced by Biometrics?” sharing: “We see much less interaction needed by the traveler, making it less stressful and more seamless. We’re seeing biometrics really help the travel industry cope with the volumes of travelers going up and the need to really process people quicker.” Read the full article to explore how biometrics solutions are shaping passenger journeys now and into the future. Chief Operating Officer | Comments on the impacts of data privacy & cybersecurity on operations, brand, & marketing
Two things: The program described here is not facial recognition - it’s facial verification (or comparison, if you prefer). And, why do the TSA & other agencies (and private orgs) need to use facial verification? We need facial verification because there were 3205 data breaches last year (6860 since 2021, that we know about) that compromised personal information, the primary source today of proving you are who you claim to be. Facial verification is conducted with your full knowledge and consent and compares a known source of truth - usually your government issued ID - with a live version of you. That’s a 1 -1 comparison that answers the question - are you who you claim to be? That’s not the problematic use of facial recognition where law enforcement and intelligence agencies use biometrics for investigations and surveillance. They seek to answer questions like “who are you, what you doing, and where are you going/have been” using images compared to large photo databases without your knowledge or consent. Let’s not confuse the two and end up regulating out of existence a tool that can make stolen data less valuable and, as a result, reduce identity crimes. https://lnkd.in/eKaK4yZe

Sadly, this is more of the same "clickbait "coverage of #biometric centric #identity. As biometric #digitalidentity truly becomes mainstream - and we're seeing the indicators in the form of more regulation, testing protocols, and certifications - the industry is going to have to stand up and work hard to communicate effectively about the power of this technology, what it can deliver, as well as what to avoid as we've learned the hard way about how it can go wrong. All in the service of making sure it's done rightI For more on this, check out Acuity Market Intelligence latest endeavor The Prism Project www.the-prism-project.com

ICYMI on INTERNATIONAL NEWS: Airport biometrics bans proposed in US state and federal legislation 🛫 🚫 In California, lawmakers are pushing back against biometric-based airport security system, arguing that it creates a divide between those who can’t afford it and those who can’t. The proposed bill would require third-party vendors to set up separate lanes for their customers rather than allowing them to skip ahead in regular TSA lines. While the legislation has bipartisan support, industry groups and airlines oppose it, citing concerns about economic losses and slower service for passengers. Meanwhile, at the federal level, Senators are targeting the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)'s use of facial recognition technology. Critics worry about the potential privacy implications and impact on checkpoint wait times. Despite the pushback, TSA is seeking to expand its biometric initiatives, aiming to enhance airport security by using new technologies like state-issued digital IDs stored on travelers' phones. h/t Biometric Update #biometrics #facialrecognition #privacy #TSA #digitaleconomy https://lnkd.in/gcqvWMxE
