Pelvic Organ Prolapse Awareness Month is just around the bend. Patients, practitioners, industry, please BANG the DRUM long and loud next month! APOPS established #POPAwarenessMonth in 2014 via Joint Resolution 71 with introductory efforts of Senators Lazich and Taylor, and cosponsored by Representatives Endsley, Skowronski, and Johnson. I remain so thankful for their engagement. If 1 in 2 women prevalence isn't enough to lift the veil on this common, cryptic women's health issue, I don't know what is. Here's a link to some tools to aid process. A week has passed since we returned from Pittsburgh, where we attended the Mobile Healthcare Association’s 19th Annual Mobile Health Clinics Conference. It was a thrill to connect in real life with people who we’d only met on Zoom, and we’re still energized by all of the incredible panel discussions and speakers who offered up their insights and expertise. This community of public health care advocates is motivated to share methods, processes, successes and best practices to support other programs that increase health access and equity. Below are our Top 5 conference highlights. Let us know what resonated with you! 1 - Eliminating stigma Dr. Diana Ramos, the California Surgeon General, said about #mentalhealth that, “we can eliminate #stigma just by making it part of the regular conversation.” She also called mobile clinics “ambassadors for patient trust.” 2 - Advocating for prevention Two clinics that provide #lungcancer screenings gave us insight on how screening and early treatment can significantly reduce mortality rates from the disease – the leading cause of cancer death. Traditionally, age and smoking history were requirements for screening, but these clinics are advocating for increased #preventive exams for those with other risk factors, such as environmental exposure, second-hand smoke and previous lung disease. 3 - Going on tour We loved taking a peek inside all the #mobileclinics on the exhibition floor, and seeing all the innovative ways people can transform these roving units for specific programs, from #mammography to pediatric dentistry. 4 - Professional pivots We really enjoyed chatting with long-time #healthcare providers at lunch, and discovered that they were entering the mobile health space for the first time. We heard about their doubts and successes in the #planning process, and were so energized by the initiative and enthusiasm they brought to entering a new field. 5 - Build rapport and trust will follow Throughout so many sessions, the main message was clear: Start with meeting clients where they are. Staff from a Los Angeles mobile clinic offering #behavioralhealth services explained that they try to establish trust as a foundation for #qualitycare. One colleague said: “The more I show my face, the more people want mental health services.”

We advocate for “health equity,” which means that we want everyone to have a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible and oral health is no exception. The challenge is that there is a shortage of dentists and dental hygienists, and underrepresented communities receive less care due to lack of access. Find out how we are closing the gap on oral health inequity: https://bit.ly/3RFQqU3
