Professor: How do we get research into the hands of police? Police: How can I find new ideas and research that's easily digestible and relevant? During my years in university and policing there has always been a wide gap between academic research and law enforcement. Craig Bennell and Kirk Luther have built a bridge: Check out Applied Police Briefings to find free easy to read summaries of everything from recruiting to human resources to investigations to training to tactics. Did I mention it's free? Who doesn't like free? * I do not know either editor. This is my personal recommendation.

Applied Police Briefings summarises latest relevant academic research in an easily digestible format. Follow them to keep yourself and your force up to date.

Although written from a chief of police perspective, this could easy convey to military change of commands/leadership roles and cooperate executive positions. Incredible insight from a great leader.

Cities deploying our technology are observing an immediate reduction in unsafe parking in No Parking zones. A hidden benefit is that this is a productivity tool that allows police departments to allocate resources to urgent matters.

Excellent article about Police-Press interaction. What I found interesting is the advice provided is really just what anyone should do in a healthy relationship: 1. Communicate clearly, consistently, and often 2. Anticipate issues and plan accordingly 3. Operate and communicate with and from a position of mutual respect 4. Set realistic and reasonable expectations 5. Be willing to give a little to get a little 6. Communicate afterwards to assess what worked and what didn’t 7. Oh….if I didn’t already say it…communicate. While written for Police, I do like that the article offers guidance for the press as well. These principles can be utilized by leadership not just with the press during events, but even during internal crisis management or daily communication.

I want to thank the Buffalo Police Commissioner, Joseph Gramaglia, for allowing Dr. Dae-Young Kim and I to evaluate their Micro-Hot Spots Policing Program. This is directly related to the Gun Involved Violence Elimination Program (GIVE) funded by the State of New York. The findings suggest that a police agency can apply the basic components of a hot spot program (e.g., use analysis to identify hot spots and have officers spend time in those locations) to help reduce crime, and it does not necessarily have to wait to develop a fully-formed hot-spot program (e.g., a CAD label, grid maps, and officer monitoring).

I tend to agree with this Policing Insight article that moving to a national police force will solve many of policing's problems. However it will likely be the largest piece of transformation policing has seen in this country - No easy task to manage at a time of great political change in the UK. I suspect conflicting priorities between individual forces will ensure this never happens. But some strides can be made and perhaps policing will end up meeting somewhere in the middle by implementing initiatives such as; standardised IT across the forces, closer cohesion and resource sharing at regional level (perhaps regional mergers?) and improved data sharing and integration to name a few.
