Throwback Thursday – In 2016, we published this article in collaboration with now-retired USDA-ARS nutritionist Dr. @Rick Barrows, describing research that evaluated the effects of feeding a fishmeal-free diet to Atlantic salmon versus a traditional fishmeal-based diet in replicated RAS. You might be surprised by one of the alternate ingredients in the fish-meal-free diet. Despite replacing all of the fishmeal with alternative proteins, including this novel ingredient, salmon growth performance and feed conversion were not compromised.     Nearly a decade later, identifying cost-effective, alternate ingredients for Atlantic salmon diets remains an important objective, as does validating the compatibility of new diets with RAS water quality, system operation, and waste discharge. @US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) https://lnkd.in/eCKK2y44 #FIresearch #aquaculture #salmon #aquafeed

For #BritishScienceWeek, we’re diving into how our analysis services have evolved over time with our hashtag, #MethodUnderAMicroscope2024. Follow to learn more about all our services that help benefit the world we live in. Plant tissue testing checks the nutrient status of the crop to ensure it’s accessing all the nutrients it requires to support its growth and development. In 2022, we took this a step further by developing our innovative package, #CropCheck. Previously, CropCheck results were benchmarked against general plant tissue critical values. This gave farmers an estimate of crop progression, but the results weren’t specific to the growth stage (GS) of the crop. We now suggest farmers test their cereal crops between GS30-37 to ensure they have enough time to correct any nutrient-related issues within spring and save money on inputs by tailoring nutrient requirements. This update to plant tissue testing allows farmers to make more insightful decisions on crop nutrition than ever before. Agro/bio fortification is an important intervention to improve nutrition status of communities. There are ways and means to build evidence about efficacy of crops. #Pakistan has also experimented with wheat bio-fortified with zinc through selection and breeding pathway. Revealing the true cost of food to transform agrifood systems. At least 7 trillion a year in hidden costs driven by unhealthy diets, high in ultra-processed foods, HFSS, causing obesity and NCDs. A miracle anit-obesity drug is not a solution here, a transformation of this inefficient black hole-like agri-food system is. "Our current agrifood systems impose huge hidden costs on our health, the environment and society, equivalent to at least $10 trillion a year, according to a ground-breaking analysis by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), covering 154 countries. This represents almost 10 percent of global GDP". "According to the 2023 edition of  The State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) , the biggest hidden costs (more than 70 percent) are driven by unhealthy diets, high in ultra-processed foods, fats and sugars, leading to obesity and non-communicable diseases, and causing labour productivity losses.
