On this #WorldFoodDay2024, the theme "Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future" highlights the need for greater diversity of nutritious foods—available in our fields, markets, and on our tables for the benefit of all. In a world where three billion people cannot afford a healthy diet, HarvestPlus and its public and private sector partners are making meaningful strides in transforming agrifood systems. Together, we are providing healthy and affordable #nutritious food to those who need it the most. More than 330 million people are now eating #biofortified food, including 103 million who consume what they grow on their farms. Additionally, the biofortified food available in markets can feed an estimated 227 million people. Improving nutrition and public health by developing and disseminating nutrient-rich staple food crops.
About us
The HarvestPlus mission is to improve nutrition and public health by developing and promoting biofortified food crops that are rich in vitamins and minerals, and providing global leadership on biofortification evidence and technology. HarvestPlus works across CGIAR as part of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). HarvestPlus and its partners develop new, more nutritious varieties of staple food crops that provide higher amounts of vitamin A, iron, or zinc, the three micronutrients identified by the World Health Organization as most lacking in diets globally. This process is known as biofortification. By 2030, we anticipate that 1 billion people will be benefiting from biofortified nutritious foods.

Recently launched GAP Initiative at Virginia Tech 2024 report highlighted the success story of Akbar 2019 from Pakistan. HarvestPlus worked with CGIAR, the National Agriculture Research System, and private sector partners to develop and rapidly deploy biofortified crop varieties to tackle the pervasive levels of #malnutrition in Pakistan – contributing to rapid variety adoption, improved livelihoods, and strengthened agricultural resilience. HarvestPlus and its public and private sector partners’ collaboration propelled Akbar 2019 to its status as the mega variety of Pakistan cultivated on over 42 percent of the wheat cropping area in planting season of 2023-24. A decade-long partnership with the Wheat Research Institute at Ayub Agriculture Research Institute, Faisalabad, and a strategic investment in Early Generation Seed (EGS) production facilitated the development and scaling of #Akbar2019. 🌾 Indonesia is Advancing Biofortification & Food Diversification for the Next 20 Years! 🌾 Indonesia has taken a groundbreaking step toward enhancing national health and nutrition with two pivotal policies that will shape biofortification and food diversification for the next two decades! 📜 🇮🇩 The Indonesian Law on the Long-term National Development Plan 2024-2045 (Law No. 59, 2024) establishes a 20-year framework prioritizing the production of biofortified crops and promoting local food diversification. Additionally, Presidential Decree No. 81, 2024 assigns BRIN (National Research and Innovation Agency) the task of advancing biofortification research across diverse crops. 🌾 Through collaboration with key government bodies like Bappenas, the Ministry of Agriculture, and BRIN, HarvestPlus has helped advocate for these transformative policies. Together, we're addressing hidden hunger and positioning biofortified crops as a national priority in Indonesia’s fight against malnutrition. 🎯 As these efforts scale up, we’re proud to support a future where nutritious, resilient food systems lead to healthier lives for millions of Indonesians, especially in rural areas. #Biofortification #FoodDiversification #IndonesianDevelopment #NutritionSecurity #HarvestPlus #HiddenHunger #BRIN #Bappenas #InnovationInAgriculture
