Chess star Tani Adewumi and his family fled from persecution in Nigeria in 2017. They first found safety in Dallas, Texas and then traveled to New York City, where a local pastor connected them with a homeless shelter. It was there that Tani, who was 6 years old, saw a chessboard for the first time. Today, Tani is one of the chess world’s fastest-rising stars! His success has helped his family do things they could only have dreamed of when they first arrived in the U.S. https://lnkd.in/gnqWjtR4

What challenge will YOU take up today? Imagine facing 10 opponents across the chessboards, strategizing each move while the clock ticks. Now, imagine winning against ALL of them. That's exactly what Nigerian chess prodigy Tunde Onakoya achieved at a conference in Germany! Not only did he dominate 10 simultaneous games, but he did it to raise funds for his inspiring initiative, Chess in Slums Africa. This remarkable feat wasn't just about his exceptional skills but it was about empowering young minds through the power of chess. What can we learn from Tunde's victory? ➡️ Believe in the impossible: Dream big, challenge yourself, and never underestimate your potential. Just like Tunde, we can achieve the seemingly impossible with the help of unwavering focus and determination. ➡️ Impact through passion: Combine your skills with a cause you care about. Tunde's love for chess fueled his victory, but his true purpose was to empower underprivileged children. Find your passion and use it to make a difference. ➡️ Every move matters: May it be chess or your life, each decision has consequences. Think strategically, adapt to challenges, and make every single move count. #challengeyourself #pushyourlimits #believeinyourself #makeadifference #inspiration

Day 39 0f 100 Days of Games of Chance in Kenya. Does African Socialism- pulling together - lend itself to Lottery and CSR? Today’s article is from April 28th 1965, it is a summary of the address by Kenya’s 1st President to parliament and it features Gambling. It seeks measures to outlaw foreign lotteries and gambling pools and to nationalise and strictly control lotteries and gambling pools in the country to ensure capital remains within the country. There is an appreciation of lotteries as a way of raising money, especially for charity or development , invoking a very Kenyan norm known as ‘Harambee’ which is the spirit of coming together and contributing towards a bigger cause. https://lnkd.in/d4P4dC8m

I was taught chess at a young age. Many libraries have chess classes for youth. The life skills that are embedded into a game of chess are endless. Chess is a game that requires patience and long-term planning. It teaches us the value of delayed gratification and the benefits of strategic thinking. Similar to life, success often comes from setting long-term goals, formulating plans, and patiently working towards achieving them. #supportchess #ChessTactics #ChessChallenge

I help leaders build liberatory cultures so their teams can become more unified so they can focus on their mission and do great work together. Looking for Co-Conspirators to Change the World.
Amber Hamilton knows that money plays a huge role in liberation and justice. https://lnkd.in/eBM4tKwe Wealth disparity and inequitable access to financial resources are a HUGE barrier to equity. And Amber is doing something to address the money game. At Memphis Music Initiative, Amber and her team invest in youth development through music engagement. Part of their work includes capacity building and investing in nonprofits by providing operational funding. Now if you work in the nonprofit sector, you can understand how HUGE this focus is. This funder is actually helping nonprofits pay for the things most funders refused to pay for. And y'all, maybe these funders don't realize this, but the electric company needs money to keep lights on. The rent has to be paid. Salaries aren't funded by magical money giving elves. As my father liked to FREQUENTLY tell me, money doesn't grow on trees. SOMEBODY has got to fund operations. It's wild to me that funders with really fancy offices, and good salaries, and mountains of money force nonprofits to operate in ways that extract financially from employees and lead to burnout. And when you think about the fact that the origins of much of this money comes from extractive and exploitative business practices that actually cause the inequities nonprofits are trying to address, you can see how completely out of pocket some of this funder behavior truly is. And I really appreciate the work Amber is doing to change how funders think about supporting the nonprofit sector. My favorite part of how they get this message out to their fellow funders is through humorous musical skits https://buff.ly/42BPwvO (You've got to check out MMI's YouTube channel - there are so many gems.) Amber uses her musical skills and humor to speak truth to power and I am here for it! This #BlackHistoryMonth, I'm celebrating 29 Black women who have influenced me through the ways they pursue their own liberation. Black women's work is often unrecognized and not cited, and this month I'm determined to pass out a few flowers to Black women. #Day6 #29LoveLettersToBlackWomen #GiveBlackWomenTheirFlowers

Last night I was sobbing watching a movie, I hated it and loved it at the same time, lol. But the tears came flooding when I realized the movie was based on a true story, at the end. The Beautiful Game is "more than a film", it's a beautiful story about second chances. The Homeless World Cup brings people all over the world together, who are struggling in some form or way, for one thing - The Beautiful Game of sports. As a society, we are quick to judge the homeless because of the reputation and general bias that we see of them portrayed in the media. What we forget is that they are, or once were - in most cases - more than just a "homeless person". They had hopes, dreams and plans at some point - but life got in the way - this gives them a second chance; to start over, start a hobby, be a team player, or to just escape the never ending feeling of loneliness. The Beautiful Game reminds you that regardless of how it's told, everyone has a story that deserves to be heard. I donated before the movie credits were even over, that's how much it moved me. And next time you are quick to judge the homeless, instead ask them something, anything, "How did you end up here?" You might be surprised at the answer you get... #motivation #movies #netflix

Amazing vision led by a great man. I am sure you will surpass that target. Tunde reminds me the importance of vision and planning. I have seen a lot of his work and there are results of good planning skill. Notably, no vision is obtainable without good planning and ability to see. #vision #planning
Tunde Onakoya is not visiting NYC for Broadway and it’s bright lights, he’s here on a mission & a mandate. Passion is a driving force.
Watch: Tunde Onakoya in video showing where he won 10 chess games at once to raise money for his NGO. He posted this on his Instagram page, where he wrote, “On day two of the didconference, I played a simultaneous chess match against 10 players at once. “After an almost two hour battle of wits I managed to win all the games. “The Chess exhibition helped us raise enough money to support the education of 100 children in our academy. “One of the toughest opponents I played during this match holds a PhD in Mathematical logic, was Chairman of the United Nations security council and a former Bulgarian foreign minister. It was a hard game. “One of the toughest opponents I played during this match holds a PhD in Mathematical logic, was Chairman of the United Nations security council and a former Bulgarian foreign minister. It was a hard game. “He came up to me after the match and we had such a lovely conversation afterwards. The beauty of chess really is in the way it connects us as a universal language regardless of our background. “I definitely made the kids proud with this one.
