I gave a presentation today on microgrids. 10 minutes to explain a vision of the future as it is unfolding. As part of my BNI (Business Network International) Tuesday morning chapter meeting, I was afforded the opportunity to speak. I like to talk. 10 minutes is not enough. In preparing for this presentation, trying to open the eyes of 25 people to look beyond what fuels our cars to a much bigger question of how we interact with energy, I arrived upon a surprise. The oil boom of the early 20th Century derailed a potential start down the road to solar power generation. What? It’s a fascinating story about Augustin Mouchot in the 1860s recognizing coal was a limited resource that needed to be replaced with alternative energy and built a solar powered ice maker. ☀️🧊 An alternate possible history were it not for the cheap, plentiful, “harmless” energy source bubbling out of the ground little more than 100 years ago. A century of living dirty. And just now realizing we took a wrong turn and need to get back to clean, renewable, local community energy that is smart and flexible, abundant and storable, quiet and much less smoky. My perspective on humanity and how we interact with technology, how we extend ourselves out into the world, is very informed by Marshall McLuhan’s ideas. And thus the reversal seems inevitable. The shoe was always going to drop. To mix even more metaphors: The train has left the station. New research sheds light on the origin of ultrawide binary objects in the Kuiper belt, challenging previous assumptions. The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded $50 million over the next five years to establish the Low-cost Earth-abundant Na-ion Storage (LENS) consortium. Led by DOE’s Argonne National Laboratory, the consortium includes DOE’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

1915 Giacomo Ciamician published his prediction of the use of solar energy in Science. He predicted that humans would one day be able to directly convert sunlight into energy, stored in a ‘fuel’ as an alternative to fossil fuels. Today, photovoltaic solar panels can produce electricity, but scientists are also working towards other methods of harnessing the sun’s power, such as solar fuels that mimic photosynthesis. *rsc.org He was a pioneer in photochemistry and green chemistry. #onthisdayinmath

Here's what I've been reading lately: "Breakthrough in Perovskite Solar Cells: 2D Templates Boost Efficiency and Durability" Scientists from Rice University have developed a method to improve the stability and efficiency of perovskite solar cells by using 2D perovskite templates. The technique enhances the quality of the photovoltaic films, leading to higher efficiency and longer durability. The cells maintained 97% of their efficiency after 1,000 hours at 85°C, a significant step towards commercial viability.
