Nairobi is Kenya's economic powerhouse, accounting for 9% of the country's 48.5 million population. However, expanding urbanization has outpaced essential service development, resulting in a number of challenges. Poor sanitation has harmed public health, the environment, and the economy, costing the country an estimated 0.9% of its GDP. Raw sewage discharge into waterways is a serious issue because only 51% of the city is served by sewers. This practice pollutes both surface and ground water, resulting in disease outbreaks, adverse environmental effects and economic losses. Kenya is implementing the Nairobi Rivers Sewerage Improvement Project phase 2 (NaRSIP II) through the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA), with the objective to increase citywide coverage of #enhanced #sanitation services from 48% to 55%. Dynamic Education, Governance, and Development Specialist Driving Transformational Development and Resilience in Public and Humanitarian Sectors
The absence of reported fatalities doesn't fully convey the ground reality. The vital lifeline road to North Eastern Kenya is disrupted upstream before reaching Garissa, impacting transportation across the region. Moreover, the deteriorating condition of last-mile feeder roads exacerbates vulnerabilities, hindering access to stable food supplies and stifling local economic activity. These challenges underscore the need for urgent intervention to address infrastructure gaps and revitalize economic prospects. #KenyaInfrastructure #EconomicDevelopment #CommunityResilience

🧪A field enumerator (Sarah Mwale) in Zambia tests household water samples for chlorine levels after interviewing residents. ❔ To understand if it's worth paying for on-site piped water services in small towns and rural areas, #Aquaya is gathering information about all the costs involved (#capital, operating, and #maintenance) and comparing them with the benefits people get over time. 📊 The #data collected and compiled include: ✅ Cost data from customers ✅ Cost data from service providers ✅ Information on benefits from customers ✅ Information on benefits from non-customer stakeholders USAID | USAID Global Waters | #WASH |#REALWater | #RuralWater | #fieldwork | #OnPremises

Senior WASH Manager|Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Expert|Water resource Specialist |Hydrologist |Driving Sustainable WASH Solutions
Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the water sector.! 😎 Privatizing water services in the Somali region of Ethiopia should be made, after a comprehensive assessment of the potential benefits and risks, taking into account the specific context and needs of the region. PPPs can be a valuable tool for tackling water challenges in the Somali region of Ethiopia, but their success hinges on careful planning, robust regulations, strong community engagement, and a commitment to sustainability. Conducting thorough feasibility studies, employing the right model, and prioritizing ethical considerations are the key to realizing the potential of PPPs for long-term, equitable, and sustainable water management in the region. To ensure everyone in the Somali region has access to safe and reliable water, and any solution, including PPPs, should be chosen with this core principle in mind. #Alternativemodels #Contextualfactors #Pilotprojects. 👈🏽 👈🏽

The #EnWASH program aims to facilitate access to and use of sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene services as well as financing and governance in northern Ghana. One part of the program focuses on maintaining the Open Defecation-Free (ODF) status. Researchers visited 30 communities across 7 districts in 3 northern regions in Ghana to understand why most communities relapse within a year of attaining ODF status. This activity will help the team design an incentive study and measure the effectiveness of the incentives in sustaining ODF in Ghanaian communities. 💧 #WaterSecurity is critical for the growth and transformation of any economy. Tanzania’s 2025 National Development Vision recognises #water as a priority sector for enhancing the quality of life of its citizens. Since 2006, various development initiatives have been implemented through the #WaterSector Development Programme, WSDP. But 𝗜𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 in the country are allocated. The Global Water Leadership Programme assisted in finding four root causes: 🔎 Political pressure to prioritise #WaterSupply over #WaterResources 🔎 Low appreciation for the contribution of water resources management to the economy 🔎 Consistent under-investment in water resources management reduces the effectiveness of the subsector and demoralises staff 🔎 Human resources challenges Explore Root Cause analysis 1 of 3 on critical barriers to #ClimateResilient #WaterManagement in Tanzania 👉 https://bit.ly/3OIBL8J

Water&Sanitation Engineer, PhD in Public Policy | Ask me anything about Water, Sanitation; Public Policy, Governance and Institutions.
#WaterPolicy #EquityandInclusion In this Sector Note we published last year, we undertook a Strategic Scenarios analysis exploring the different combinations of Sector reforms and Investment pathways to achieve universal access to water supply and sanitation in Kenya. This Sector Note provided the foundational analysis that informed the Government of Kenya's initiation of the National Water and Sanitation Investment Program (NAWASIP) and the Kenya WASH Program for Results. My key governance insight from this analytical work was the need to drive Policy engagements that advocates for increased funding for Basic access in rural areas while focusing on service delivery reforms in urban utilities to unlock resources lost in sector inefficiencies, as opposed to the traditional approach of allocating the majority of funds to safely managed services in urban areas. https://lnkd.in/dYfjEUqJ
