💧 #WaterSecurity is critical for the growth and transformation of any economy. Tanzania’s 2025 National Development Vision recognises #water as a priority sector for enhancing the quality of life of its citizens. Since 2006, various development initiatives have been implemented through the #WaterSector Development Programme, WSDP. But 𝗜𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 in the country are allocated. A €12 Million Boost to Transform Urban Sanitation in Africa The African Water Facility (AWF) has secured €12 million from the Nordic Development Fund (NDF) for a new funding initiative: the Africa Urban Sanitation Investment Initiative (AUSII). Launched on August 27, 2024, this project aims to revolutionize #urbansanitation across the continent.    Key objectives over the next decade: ➡ Mobilize $320 million for 50 sanitation projects ➡ Support the provision of innovative and socially inclusive solutions to solve Africa sanitation challenges ➡ Promote the transition to more targeted solutions such as onsite and decentralised sanitation systems "We hope to see more support from other partners for this important initiative which will ensure inclusive and sustainable access to safe sanitation and cross-cutting impact on development on the continent," says Mtchera Johannes Chirwa, AWF Coordinator and Acting AfDB Director for Water Development and Sanitation. 💦 AfDB allocates $46m to Ethiopia for water resilience in Borana ➡️ The African Development Fund’s Board of Directors, during their session in Abidjan on 28 February 2024, agreed to allocate $46.02 million in aid to Ethiopia. 💧This funding aims to support the second phase of the Borana Resilient Water Development for Improved Livelihoods Program in the southern part of the nation. 👉 The allocation, sourced from the African Development Bank Group’s concessional loan facility, seeks to enhance the provision of sustainable, climate-resilient, and gender-inclusive water supply and sanitation solutions for pastoral communities in the Borana zone of the Oromia region. 🗣️ Dr Beth Dunford, the Vice President for Agriculture, Human and Social Development, said, “This is a peace-building program in an environment where the extremes of climate change are increasingly manifesting, millions of livestock are lost, and conflicts are increasing among pastoralist due to limited pastures and water supply.” 🗣️ Osward M Chanda, the Water Development and Sanitation Director at the African Development Bank Group, stated, “This program responds to the critical challenge of rising water demand in Borana region and intends to mitigate the effects of drought, supporting solutions such as the development of key water infrastructure, institutional capacity building, and enhancing service delivery for sustainable and climate-resilient water provisional capacities, and improve service delivery for enduring, climate-adaptable water solutions.” 📖 Read the news with the link in the comments! #afdb #borana #watersupply #climatechange

🌍💧 #Zambia joins United Nations #Water #Convention amidst severe drought In response to an ongoing water crisis and severe drought that has significantly impacted food and energy production for its 21+ million people, #Zambia has officially joined the UN Water Convention. This move comes after Zambia declared a National Crisis and Emergency in February 2024, underlining the urgent need for effective water management. As the 5️⃣5️⃣th member of the Convention and the 12th African nation to join, Zambia is reinforcing its commitment to improved water management both within and across its borders. This decision follows recent accessions by Cote D’Ivoire and Zimbabwe in July, reflecting a growing momentum for water cooperation across Africa. Given that over 90% of Africa's freshwater rivers, lakes, and aquifers are shared across national borders, regional collaboration is crucial. Zambia’s accession to the UN Water Convention marks a significant step towards enhanced transboundary water management and regional sustainability. Any idea on which African country has the best water quality system? 1. Rwanda: - Rwanda increased from 70% in 2000 to 86% in 2017, demonstrating the country's commitment to providing safe #drinkingwater to its population (World Bank, 2021). 2. Mauritius: - The country has achieved near-universal access to clean drinking water, with over 99% of the #population having #access to improved #watersources (WHO/UNICEF, 2019). 3. South Africa: - While significant #progress has been made in improving #waterquality and accessibility, disparities persist between urban and rural areas (Stats SA, 2020). Challenges and Lesson learnt from Rural water supply projects: With the focus on Somali region of Ethiopia. 👇🏽 👇🏽 1. Challenges of Rural Water Supply Projects in Somali Region, Ethiopia. Delivering clean water to rural communities in Somali region of Ethiopia faces significant hurdles: ◾ Scarcity of Water Resources: The region is arid and semi-arid, with limited rainfall and groundwater reserves. This makes finding sustainable water sources difficult. ◾ Remote Locations and Terrain: Constructing and maintaining water infrastructure in remote areas is expensive and logistically complex. Factors like harsh terrain and limited access to construction materials can further complicate projects. ◾ Sustainability: Ensuring the long-term functionality of water systems requires community ownership and maintenance. However, limited technical expertise and financial resources at the local level can hinder proper upkeep. ◾ Climate Change: Unpredictable rainfall patterns and increased droughts threaten water security as the climate changes. ◾ Social and Cultural Considerations: The Somali people have a distinct cultural context, and neglecting these aspects can lead to project failure. This includes traditional water management practices, decision-making structures, and potential gender inequalities in water access. ◾ Displacement and Conflict: The Somali region has a history of instability and displacement due to conflict. This disrupts communities and makes it difficult to plan and implement long-term water projects. 2. Lessons Learned from Past Projects; Despite these challenges, there have been successful efforts to improve rural water access in the Somali region. Here are some key takeaways: ◾ Community Participation: Including communities in the planning, design, and implementation of water projects fosters a sense of ownership and promotes better maintenance. ◾ Appropriate Technology: Choosing technology that is low-cost, easy to maintain, and uses locally available materials is crucial for long-term success. ◾ Capacity Building: Providing training and support to local communities on water system operation and maintenance empowers them to manage their water resources effectively. ◾ Sustainability Planning: Factoring in operation and maintenance costs from the outset ensures the long-term viability of water projects. ◾ Conflict Sensitivity: Understanding and addressing social dynamics and potential conflicts over water access is essential for project success. 🥫In Adamawa State, Nigeria, migration and water challenges intersect, straining resources and communities. With the backing of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and World Food Programme, a survey of 400 households across 20 communities highlights the significant impact of migration, particularly from Cameroon, on water access and quality. Conflicts, climate change, and inadequate infrastructure exacerbate these issues, affecting livelihoods and health. Today (22 March) is World Water Day - celebrating water and raising awareness of the 2+ billion people currently living without access to safely managed drinking water. A core focus of World Water Day is to inspire action towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030. At ERM we are helping our clients address their water challenges across all of our services, helping them to look over the fence line and think about how they respond to complex water challenges that they and the communities they work in face.
