🇺🇸 USAID Economic Resilience Activity (ERA) work under AGRI-Ukraine The Agriculture Resilience Initiative – Ukraine (AGRI-Ukraine) is a $350 million USAID initiative that was established in 2022 to bolster Ukrainian agriculture exports and help alleviate the global food security crisis exacerbated by Putin’s brutal war on Ukraine. AGRI-Ukraine is strengthening Ukraine’s immediate agricultural export resilience, to support Ukrainian farmers and reduce global food insecurity. USAID ERA is one of the implementing partners under AGRI-Ukraine, with an approximately $30 million mandate to enhance Ukrainian infrastructure capacity to efficiently export agricultural goods. ERA is supporting market system resilience through alternatives to the traditional Black Sea ports that are threatened by Russia’s blockades. Such measures include overland rail export via the EU and use of the Danube River to export from Romanian Black Sea ports. Sesame Seeds of Conflict: How Agriculture Fuels Tensions in Ethiopia and Sudan In a startling revelation, a comprehensive research paper has unveiled the intricate ways in which the seemingly innocuous sesame seed has become a pivot around which swirls a vortex of violence, political instability, and economic upheaval in the borderlands of Ethiopia and Sudan. Over the past three years, civil war, political turbulence, and territorial disputes have dramatically reshaped the political economy of the sesame sector, transforming it from a backbone of local livelihoods into a central figure in a transnational conflict economy. The study meticulously charts the dynamics of this transformation, focusing on the competition for control over farmlands, sesame production, and trade among various actors, including government forces, local elites, militias, and rebel groups. KSE Agrocenter released the report Cooperation between Ukraine and African countries in agriculture: West Africa. 📄🌍 The report analyzes the development of agri-food systems in the most populated countries of West Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire), state support for agriculture in the region, as well as the prospects for partnership between these countries and Ukraine in the agricultural sector. Main results: 1️⃣ 14% of the region's population (63 million persons) suffer from a calorie deficit. 2️⃣ Urbanization increases rural poverty and increases countries' dependence on food imports. 3️⃣ The development of the agricultural sector is hampered by weak infrastructure, inconsistent state support for the sector, low level of technology, climate change, and excessive specialization. 4️⃣ Options for cooperation with Ukraine: · Supporting bilateral trade through the liberalization of trade regimes within the ECOWAS regional union and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA); · Joint infrastructure projects; · Transfer of agricultural technologies. by Pavel Martyshev, Hryhorii Stolnikovych and Igor Piddubnyi #Agriculture #Ukraine #WestAfrica #FoodSecurity #Trade
