Let’s do the numbers: As the United States continues its assault on homelessness. Let’s zoom in for a moment. Criminalizing homelessness means that people identified as homeless can now be arrested, charged, tried, prosecuted and incarcerated for years. Now let’s consider the value preposition here. Each homeless person now has a value assessed. Let’s call it a bounty. Ala Wild West. Do you remember? The good ole days. As of time of writing, the cost of keeping an inmate locked up varies significantly depending on the state and other factors. However, most estimates put the average cost at $30,000 to $60,000 per prisoner per year. This includes expenses such as food, housing, health care, correctional officers, facilities maintenance, and utilities Did you know many prisons in the U.S are privately owned? With share holders as beneficiaries? I mean, if you are not a paying member of society (Taxes), then you will be an asset that provides dividends to shareholders. You can’t make this tyranny up. Simply. Did I mention tax dollars fund prisons? Hummm. #friends #family #CTO #CFO #SMB #Entrepreneur #Neighbor #teens #parents #wife #husband #mom #dad #Employers #technews #Cryptonews #Blockchain #fourthindustrialrevolution

Former Detective, Programme Consultant “Three Girls”, Activist, Humanitarian, Public Speaker, Founder of The Maggie Oliver Foundation
It gives me absolutely no pleasure to say that based on our work at The Maggie Oliver Foundation every day with victims and survivors trying desperately to report and prosecute rape and serious sexual offences that this is not just the Metropolitan Police , it is a national problem. We advocate and fight for many victims of serious sexual offences when they are being pushed away, ignored, even criminalised. It’s truly shocking how the system blocks them, silences them and joins ranks against anyone who dares challenge this broken system. You only have to listen to or read Vera Baird The Baird Review around at Greater Manchester Police last month! (Which incidentally the msm barely reported as it’s not London, which in itself is shocking!) I do have to balance this by saying we have now built at least a few very good relationships with senior officers in some forces. Good people who will communicate, work together and try to sort out the cases we take to them….. and THIS is exactly what’s needed!!! Less defensiveness, officers willing to take responsibility and address the problems rather than pretend everything is ok. And we also need a TOTALLY INDEPENDENT COMPLAINTS PROCESS taken out of the hands of police and PCCs. These are internal processes more intent on covering up mistakes/neglect/corruption rather than addressing the actual problems. And this is why policing is in crisis in our country. And now the public have seen thus, it really won’t just go away. We need change, action, accountability, transparency and honesty…. Do I think this will come any time soon? Depressingly I don’t. And that’s why our work The Maggie Oliver Foundation is so important - and I believe unique. And the key is that we aren’t funded by those who would silence us on threat of withholding funding- mix power with money and there’s a real problem. And that’s why support of the public, donations, corporate funding etc is so necessary to our small charity. It gives us independence, and the ability to always speak the truth on behalf of the survivors who share their experiences with us. With still an enormous mission to achieve though , I’d like to thank every single person who supports us. ❤️

This is extraordinarily good! One of Led By Donkeys best actions, and projected right onto the huge front doors of HMP Wormwood Scrubs! Please #watch and #share this 6 min video, narrated by Chris Packham Did you know there are more than ***40*** political prisoners in UK prisons right now? Some are on remand, so imprisoned without trial. At a time when the prison service is in meltdown and prisons are overflowing... why is it so important to the Government keep nonviolent people locked up? Could it be that they are telling the truth and demanding an end to fossil fuels and arms sales to 1srael? "It’s time for Labour to remember its roots and reinstate the right to peaceful protest." I've spent a short stint on remand for nonviolent action, and it's really not great in prison. So please support these brave folk, please share this widely And visit RIPS (Rebels in Prison Support) to see who they are - https://lnkd.in/e3NAeEw2 - and Donate to support them in prison here - https://lnkd.in/e-T-HNfi Watch the Led By Donkeys video here - https://lnkd.in/eXkPzNhK UPDATE - there's been a little bit of an update - read this new release - https://lnkd.in/eGaQyipf

Whether it’s prison massacres in 2021 and 2022, the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in 2023, or the government’s launch of its “war on gangs” in 2024, InSight Crime has had its finger on the pulse of Ecuador’s organized crime crisis, covering the most important events and trends. Now, as the government’s militarized security approach continues with no end in sight, criminal groups like the Lobos, Choneros, and Tiguerones will continue adapting, and we will be there to write about it. The work we do in Ecuador, however, is costly and dangerous. Please consider visiting our donation page so we can continue to cover one of the region’s most dynamic organized crime situations. https://bit.ly/46y1sRh

**Iowa Steps Up to Support Crime Victims** It's heartening to see Iowa commit $5.5M to fill the funding void for crime victims. This injection of cash will undoubtedly make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by crime. The funding will be used to provide essential services, such as counseling, victim advocacy, and support for those who have been victims of crime. This is a crucial step forward in ensuring that crime victims receive the support they need to heal and recover. It's essential that governments take proactive measures to support those who have been affected by crime. This funding will not only help victims but also contribute to breaking the cycle of crime and promoting a safer community. Kudos to Iowa for taking this important step! #Iowa #CrimeVictims #SupportForVictims #CommunityFirst Source: https://lnkd.in/gMYAzX4g Update Date: 21 hours ago

On May 21st, the anniversary of Vitold Ashurak's murder, we express our solidarity with all political prisoners in Belarus and honor the memory of all Belarusians who have died from Lukashenka's regime. 👉 There are currently ❗1,374 officially recognized political prisoners in Belarus jails. The real number is much higher. Political prisoners are subjected to torture and endure terrible conditions in prisons without adequate access to medical care. For over a year, there has been no information about the health and lives of some political prisoners including Nobel Prize winner Ales Bialiatski. #whereAlesBialiatski The regime is trying to block all ways of helping political prisoners and scare political activists. However, we urge you to show solidarity and choose one of the ways to support political prisoners and their families: 🔺 Support the fundraiser for the children of Belarusian political prisoners, which will go towards organizing summer activities for their kids. https://lnkd.in/eiic39Py (If you plan to travel to Belarus, please consider making an anonymous donation. Don’t donate if you are in Belarus or from Belarusian bank cards.) 🔺 Write a letter to political prisoners using the inline service Solidarity Postcards Atelier https://lnkd.in/e92Cfi9u 🔺 If it is safe for you, spread the word about the Human Rights situation in Belarus and about Belarusian political prisoners to your friends. Contact US government representatives to remind them about Belarus and Belarusians who are facing repressions. #FreeBelarus #HumanRights

We have a big problem in the state that's putting all Victim Service providers at risk due to VOCA cuts that have slashed funded programs by 40%. Right now, agencies all over the state are begging California legislatures to help find space in the budget to stabilize huge funding cuts to programs because there is no one else who can pull this off. The begging won't stop there because the only way to make up these funds is to enlist the help of donors who are already doing what they can. All call to actions for donations right now are likely being used to bear down and preserve what programs exist to prevent closures, layoffs, and most importantly no one to answer the call for help. What is law enforcement supposed to do with victims when there are no programs or limited access to services? This puts stress on the whole justice system. Watch this testimony about the impact that these cuts will have from a Riverside County Sexual Assault Survivor.
Cuts to Crime Victim Services result in lives lost. The California Legislature needs to protect core services for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, elderly abuse, and human trafficking. Programs that rely on crime victim services funding provide advocate presence at hospitals, prevent homelessness, provide housing and legal assistance, and save lives. Governor Newsom, First Partner, Speaker Rivas, pro tempore McGuire, Senator Wiener, Senator Wahab, Asm. Gabriel, and Asm. James Ramos, will you step up and fund crime victim services, services that are crucial to saving lives like Tammy's? #SaveVOCA #CALeg #CABudget

CEO of the Waves Group providing car wash services at >280 UK sites, prioritising human rights and innovative customer experience; Chair of the EAB at HMP Downview supporting prison leavers into employment
This is a succinct summary of the challenges facing the women’s prison system as is, based on what I have seen in the last couple of years. I agree that we need significant change to deliver much better outcomes - and for those a little sceptical of supporting offender outcomes in isolation, it is worth remembering that a different approach could reduce future victim impact as well. Better reoffending outcomes are better for everyone in society - whichever area of the political spectrum you inhabit. Changing the approach to female prisoners should not be driven by politics (and neither should decisions regarding male prisoner strategy, I just know less about that world!).
Why would we want to build more #prisons for women when - 3 of 4 have committed non-violent offences often driven by #poverty and trauma - 2 in 3 (at least) are victims of #domesticabuse and others of #sexualviolence and #childabuse with no support to address their trauma - more than 1 in 2 will likely get a few weeks/months yet lose her job, home and children in care with long term adverse consequences for the whole family… It costs the public purse up to £93,500 per year per woman (see below Russell Webster blog) for a place like #HMPBronzefield outside London, still privatised and Europe’s largest women’s prison, because - we send women to prison above Europe’s average rates - 3 in 4 (73%)reoffend within a year 👉🏽 PRISONS DONT WORK for most women and waste public funds! (Read the government s own assessment https://lnkd.in/gKWcDfPk) Instead we could reduce reoffending by diverting women away from custody - at the earliest point when first arrested - offering #community support in women’s centres at a cost of £1k to £2k per woman instead… - ensuring women’s needs and #trauma are addressed and they can be supported as a whole person 👉🏽 re-arrest rates are then lowered at <10%, with the possibility of keeping families together, their job and home and at a fraction of the cost! (Read London #Diversion report https://lnkd.in/gvpXHM3q) ⁉️Why, despite the new law and guidelines for more out of #court disposals, is there no #funding for all #police forces and women’s charities to ensure access to these life changing services for every #woman by the Ministry of Justice UK and HM Treasury ⁉️
