London's Metropolitan Police Service | New Scotland Yard
About us
The Metropolitan Police Service is famed around the world and has a unique place in the history of policing. Our headquarters at New Scotland Yard - and its iconic revolving sign - has provided the backdrop to some of the most high profile and complex law enforcement investigations the world has ever seen. Founded by Sir Robert Peel in 1829, the original establishment of 1,000 officers policed a seven-mile radius from Charing Cross and a population of less than 2 million. Today, The Met employs 32,000 officers together with specialist support staff and more than 2,500 volunteer police officers in the Metropolitan Special Constabulary. As well as policing London’s 620 square miles and 8.9million population, The Met has national responsibility for a variety of specialist policing units and hosts the UK’s Counter Terrorism Policing HQ. The Met is one of the largest employers in London and with a broad range of roles, from neighbourhoods to firearms. We’re recruiting people who want to make a difference, to help people and begin a career in a brilliant organisation, performing an exciting and extremely rewarding role. Today, now more than ever, is the time to join the Met. www.met.police.uk/careers

📲 We are putting phone thieves on hold by targeting those who handle, supply or sell them on. It should not be possible to steal a phone, re-register it and have someone else use it. That’s why we’re working with tech firms to improve device security, so together we can make phone theft worthless. 📱 | Our clampdown on £50m-a-year trade in stolen phones has seen 230 people arrested and more than 1,000 handsets seized. We’re tackling the organised criminality behind phone thefts, and call on tech companies to make stolen phones unusable - helping to 'design out' the criminal market. Later today, the Home Secretary will chair a summit with law enforcement bodies and industry focused on tackling smartphone thefts. One of the items that will be raised by the Met’s Deputy Commissioner, Dame Lynne Owens, will be strengthening security on phones so stolen devices cannot be easily resold. The Met wants to work with industry to prevent stolen phones from being able to re-connect to cloud services and make IMEI numbers accessible from the lock screen of all smartphones. Commander Owain Richards, who is leading the Met's response to phone thefts, said: “By intensifying our efforts we’re catching more perpetrators and protecting people from having their phone stolen in the capital. But we need help from partners and industry to do more. "That is why we’re working with other agencies and government to tackle the organised criminality driving this trade and calling on tech companies to make stolen phones unusable.” You can read more about our efforts to tackle phone theft and our call on industry to help 'design out' the criminal market in stolen phones: https://lnkd.in/dg6EQTNy

Instant karma for pickpockets! Two men were targeting Londoners enjoying a night out in Soho when our plain clothes officers noticed them acting suspiciously. Just seconds after the men dipped into a woman’s bag and stole a phone, officers intervened and arrested the thieves. The phone was returned to the victim and both men face 16 weeks in prison.

Non-contact sexual offences are still sexual offences. Cyberflashing. Upskirting. Sharing intimate images without consent. Just because there was no physical contact doesn’t mean it’s not a crime. We know reporting may feel daunting, but we’re here to support you – and there is no time limit on when you can report to police. If you’ve been a victim, report it to the police online, or by calling 101 or 999 in an emergency. ➡️ Report a crime | https://lnkd.in/e3sUVDrp

When a shoplifter stealing steaks 'meats' the law 🥩 After several reports of theft were made by a Co-Op store in Lambeth, Inspector Darren Watson and his team set up a 'steak-out' in the back room to catch the thief in action. Working with local businesses, the team have jailed 11 out of 14 most prolific shoplifters in Lambeth in the last month - including this one.

It’s important that the emergency services practice dealing with major incidents. Last week, teams from multiple agencies participated in an exercise to test their response to a major incident at The O2 in Greenwich. The exercise was not being carried out in response to any specific threat or intelligence - but is part of our continual work to ensure we are prepared for any type of incident or attack, should the worst happen.
