How to Hit your Target in #Retail. Target, the US giant wanted to rebuild itself differently. It thought of revamping its stores, offering customers an experience which can get the best of its offline presence as well as adopt new digital technology. Instead of keeping the two channels separate, Target doubles down by leveraging its physical stores as a springboard for their digital quick-commerce delivery model. Its similar to your Noon/Talabat or Big Basket/Dunzo but catered by their own huge network of stores. Crazy! Imagine a whopping 80% of your digital volume handled by your own physical outlets, blowing every other competitor out of the water. But there's more. Target's not just playing catch-up in this domain. They're leading the way by partnering with logistics co. Shipt for same-day delivery, giving consumers what they want, whenever they want it. So, HOW are they doing all this? Firstly, by having the right people in the driver's seat. Target's digital initiatives are steered by leaders who know their stuff, making it easy to drive innovation and progress by understanding the bigger picture behind the technological fluff. Secondly, the people. Target invests in upskilling their workforce, so they understand the tech they're working with deeply and have more skin in the game during and after the transformation. Thirdly, Communication. Target establishes seamless channels of communication to ensure everyone's on the same page and moving in the same direction. With a company wide growth mindset, which is rare to find in most large companies, they're not afraid to try new things, integrating digital technologies into their existing processes for maximum efficiency. Obviously there's no silver bullet for all this. Yet, by just embracing innovation, investing in the right talent, and staying nimble, you'll be well-positioned to surf high on any technological wave.

Back from a great week in Singapore catching up with industry leaders, clients and friends at the eTail Asia & Australia conference. The insights shared on the opportunities and challenges in retail were invaluable. Below are some of the key takeaways, which are very much in line with what we are seeing in the field. As Sandeep Varaganti, CEO of Jiomart, and the panelists highlighted, in today’s competitive retail market, the consumer is spoilt for choice. They have become accustomed to high standards: - convenience (availability and accessibility, wherever the customer is) - rich experiences (to be entertained or educated) - personalisation and trust (personalised buying experience while upholding transparent data privacy standards) - quality and value (higher quality at lower prices) As expected, technology, particularly AI, was a key theme at the conference, as a means to adapt and stay ahead of the market. Many of the discussions revolved around how to utilise AI and data to improve every aspect of business: - forecast and drive sales - personalise marketing - improve customer experience - optimise operations, supply chain and fulfillment Examples ranged from using weather data as one data-point to support sales forecasting or software built to support Beauty Advisors in-store (Danny Ho Sa Sa Executive Director & CFO), to in-store facial recognition for automatic payments (Danni Peirce 7 Eleven CEO), to IoT and AI to run efficient store operations, freeing up staff to focus on their internal and external customers (Denise Gamo-Halaguena, PMP Mcdonalds Head of Digital Acceleration). It is exciting the amount of value that can be created for a business and their customers when the right tech is leveraged and executed successfully.
