Whether you’re in the process of making a retirement or estate plan or you intend to donate property to charity, you’ll need to know the value of your assets. For many hard-to-value items, such as closely held business interests, real estate, art, and collectibles, an appraisal may be necessary. I saw a post today about the CFRE and how lots of great fundraisers don’t have one and lots of bad ones do. I certainly know many in both categories! However, I ultimately took the plunge for a few reasons I’d like to share: 1. For me, having those letters after my name is a badge of honor. They represent YEARS of very literal blood, sweat, tears (some of joy, some of pain) and lots of learning. I’m proud of those letters, which I obtained after one try, with no studying - likely because of that second sentence 😂 2. I was on a path to full-time consulting, and those letters tell those OUTSIDE of our sector something that I’d have to explain more without them. Many of my first clients didn’t know much about fundraising, but they did a Google search and saw that CFRE was a thing. Having that credential opened doors and helped me support enough clients to consult full time. 3 (and most important to me). Maintaining the CFRE provides me with a structured way to keep learning. Some people don’t need this kind of structure. But for me, knowing that continuous learning is the only way to keep those letters is very helpful. Sure, I love the work. And sure, I love learning. But life be life-ing and professional development can easily fall by the wayside. The CFRE holds me accountable. So definitely get it. Or don’t. 🤷🏾♀️ The bottom line is this: Do the work with integrity. Do it with wisdom. Do it with heart and soul. For God’s sake, PLEASE do it with some strategy 😜🙈. Do it for whatever core reason makes sense for you - while simultaneously respecting donors and those whom donors allow you serve.
