A remarkable move by the city of Vancouver, enforcing a first-of-its-kind bylaw to reduce building emissions by 2030. Here’s hoping Toronto follows suit! With the built environment responsible for over 40% of carbon emissions, massive changes needed to happen yesterday. This is a call to action! Let’s continue the efforts toward building healthier and more resilient buildings. #buildbetter https://lnkd.in/g4MJ-_k7

The Resilient Building Council was pleased to provide input to the Expert Advisory Group for the Climateworks Centre report 'Climate-ready homes: Building the case for a renovation wave in Australia'. As outlined in the report, we must focus on prioritising energy performance upgrades for vulnerable households, including low-income and social housing through a range of targeted initiatives, including financial incentives and education. Location-specific upgrades based on local disaster risk should also be undertaken at the same time as energy performance upgrades; for example, considering disaster resilient materials when upgrading wall and roof cladding or window systems in bushfire-prone areas. Homes built today are expected to have a long lifespan. It is important that they are built to meet future climate and comfort needs for decades to come to avoid lifecycle emissions and waste, achieve Net Zero and protect homes, people and communities. This means prioritising both energy performance and disaster resilience to avoid maladaptation, cost duplication and improve social, economic and environmental outcomes. The Property Council of Australia and the Green Building Council of Australia today released a new report, ‘Every Building Counts: for state and territory governments’, calling for governments to implement sustainability planning incentives and density bonuses to facilitate the rapid development of energy-efficient, all-electric new buildings. Minister for Water, Energy and Emissions Reduction Shane Rattenbury MLA attended the release. “Planning incentives like density bonuses and green door policies would increase the sustainability of new buildings by addressing a primary concern for builders: the expenses, time commitment and unpredictability associated with planning systems,” Shane Martin, Property Council ACT Executive Director said. “The recommendations outlined in this report establish a foundation for state and territory governments to meet the global call to enhance the resilience of our homes and buildings. - Davina Rooney, Green Building Council of Australia Chief Executive Officer Access the report here https://lnkd.in/ekiKQc9m Full media release: https://lnkd.in/g3PzUAkR Media: https://lnkd.in/g9TZZjVs https://lnkd.in/gn8FKXEV Mike Zorbas Katie Stevenson Jen Williams Bruce Djite Emily Young Ruth Palmer MBA Rebecca Ellston Daniel Gannon Rhys Prka Ellie Laing-Southwood Sahil Prasad Matthew Kandelaars Eleanor Sondergeld The Canberra Times Lucy Bladen Shay Singh #everybuildingcounts #esg #sustainability #housing #electric #energyefficiency

The Rise of Green Homes: A Sustainable Future for the UK Property Market In recent years, the UK property market has witnessed a notable shift toward sustainability, as environmental concerns and rising energy costs have pushed 'green homes' to the forefront of buyer preferences and developer strategies. This movement is not just a fleeting trend but a substantial change in how we approach living spaces and building standards. Why Green Homes? The urgency of climate change and the increasing awareness of our environmental impact have led many consumers to prioritise energy efficiency and sustainability in their housing choices. This shift is partly driven by the rising costs of traditional energy sources and the potential long-term savings offered by eco-friendly homes. Also, government initiatives aimed at reducing carbon footprints have accelerated the adoption of sustainable practices in the housing sector. Government Incentives and Regulations The UK government has introduced several incentives to promote energy-efficient homes. From subsidies for solar panels to grants for insulation, these initiatives make it economically viable for homeowners to invest in green technology. Additionally, the introduction of stricter building regulations that mandate higher energy efficiency standards ensures that new developments are part of the solution to our current environmental challenges. The Market Response Developers and builders are increasingly integrating sustainable technologies such as heat pumps, advanced insulation materials, and smart home systems that manage energy consumption efficiently. The market has seen a rise in properties boasting high Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings, which are becoming a significant factor in purchase decisions. The Benefits of Investing in Green Homes Investing in green homes isn't just a moral or environmental decision; it's a financially prudent one as well. Properties with better energy efficiency tend to have higher resale values and attract buyers more quickly in the competitive market. Additionally, they offer homeowners lower utility bills, which can be a significant selling point. Challenges Ahead Despite these positives, challenges remain. The initial cost of integrating or retrofitting green technologies can be high, and there's a need for more skilled professionals in green construction. This will inevitably slow progress down until the costs reduce. This may also see a departure for many landlords who are already feeling the pinch with rising costs in other areas. #GreenHomesUK #SustainableLiving #EcoFriendlyHomes #UKPropertyTrends #ClimateSmartHomes #EcoInvestments #BuildingGreen #SustainableUKProperties
