Douglas SBD Dauntless Divebomber. This was a workhorse of the US Navy in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Like many other naval aviation aircraft (P-3, P2V, Catalina, others) the Dauntless found a second career in the world of Aerial Firefighting due to its robust design and stout construction. A historical perspective of the amazing capabilities of our military industrial complex; in the 1940s. How big was the U.S. Navy during WWII? By January 1945, the Navy had 61,045 vessels including 23 battleships, over 100 aircraft carriers, 59 cruisers, 425 destroyers, 400 destroyer-escorts, 237 subs and 54,000 landing craft and assault ships, plus 37,000 planes.

Upon completion of your work, I guarantee you would step back and be truly impressed by what you created. That is truly what this life is all about. You have to believe that you are the artist and you are chipping away at all of the rough edges. Underneath lies the person that you want to be. That person has always been there but until you start to chip away at those rough edges and do the necessary work, the best version of you will elude you. Most people think an artist is someone who creates pieces of art using their skills combined with their imagination. We all have the ability to be artists. We all have creativity and imagination. The work of art is us. We are the masterpiece. Most of us believe that we are far away from our perfect self. Truth be told, you are only a few rough edges away. Once you polish off those final rough edges, it’s amazing how fast the masterpiece is unveiled. The trick to all of this is if you don’t believe that you are a work of art, you will never be able to imagine it therefore you can never create it! Stay hard!

This is truly a success story worth telling. The process from beginning to end occurred just the way we would all have hoped. It started with OPNAV N98 commissioning a study called RATPAC (led and staffed by 2 Circle training SME's) that was directed to determine the correct capacity and capability of all training media needed to support effective Air Warfare training. The study relied upon objective, measured data collected by NAVAIR PMA-298's Training Analysis Project (TAP). One of the most significant findings from the study was the actual skill acquisition and skill decay curves that an individual/squadron/CVW experiences during pre-deployment training. From this analysis, it was determined that due to a lack of "proficiency maintenance" between major training exercises and most critically, while on deployment, the proficiency of our Naval aircrew steadily declined beginning with the end of the last training exercise prior to deployment. These results were briefed to the key stakeholders at OPNAV and Admiral Andrew "Bucket" Loiselle, USN, Ret., acted decisively. Bucket provided the resources and direction to NAVAIR PMA-205 to build the capability that the Fleet required in order maintain a high level of proficiency when it mattered, deployment. As noted by Girl, the execution of this plan was astonishingly quick: less than 3 years from the day I briefed Bucket until the day the Fleet received the capability. Well done to the Government / Military / Industry team that made it all happen!

Outstanding work Dave! Leap strides in taking the "I think, IMO" and otherwise subjectivity out of assessing, predicting and prescribing and controlling for performance vs. changes. The ability to understand baseline and control for outcomes to future changes in the man (unisex definition) and machine system (HMI) is powerful. When is this going to be adopted universally across DOD platforms? With all of the desire and push to reduced crew, increased automation / autonomy, et al, in the Commercial side, it would seem that applying this would be critical to safely and rationally accelerating regulatory and public acceptance and adoption in the commercial realm.

The U.S. Navy is pushing hard to deliver Advanced Air Wing capabilities to the entire fleet, and the USS Carl Vinson is the carrier to set an example for years to come as dozens of new capabilities are added. Between non-kinetic capabilities in the F-35’s Tech Refresh 3 (TR-3) and EA-18G AN/ALQ-249 NGJ-MB, and kinetic capabilities like the AGM-88G AARGM-ER and AIM-174B ALC, the Carl Vinson is pushing the envelope in advanced capabilities that are being fielded in the Pacific, completing another keystone of the United States in its pivot to the Indo-Pacific. “Our carrier air wing and carrier strike group is a constantly evolving capability. #ICYMI Rear Adm. Doug Verissimo, Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic participated in a panel discussion, April 9, at the 2024 Sea-Air-Space Convention to discuss modernizing our efforts to improve and increase warfighter readiness. He addressed the capability of the carrier strike group and the ability to adapt for worldwide operations.   “I am unabashedly a huge fan of the carrier strike group and the capability they bring. My view in generating readiness, and how we generate readiness across the carrier strike group fleet, is that it’s an all-hands, all-team effort. You can really see how that integrated certified force, that gets put together by the fleet commanders, evaluated by the carrier strike groups on either coast for the emerging threat, is developed, expanded, understood, and fed back to those folks who are going out [to deploy] to be the most capable," said Rear Adm.
