As we sail west, the shores of San Diego disappear over our shoulder and the vast ocean ahead leaves one’s mind thinking, “What awaits us?” The prep work is complete and a feeling of catharsis washes over the crew after having worked tirelessly to bring us into this next chapter. A great Chief Petty Officer once said, “Sailors belong on ships and ships belong at sea.” One might roll their eyes at the corny one-liner, but it is vital that each of us remembers that we signed up to do this job. Regardless of geopolitical situation, job tasking, platform, or personal life situation, we remain sailors of the United States Navy and will act on the orders when called. Deployment is an “all hands on deck” evolution to ensure Stockdale maintains its capability to project power and maintain freedom of the seas. It’s going to take the entire crew to stay ready, set the tone, and -when thing do get strenuous- take care of business as the professionals we are. There is a force moving leaders onboard Stockdale to prepare our sailors on a personal and mental level for what might await us.  There isn’t a sailor on Stockdale who hasn’t been asked, “How will you react when things don’t go your way, on your worst day?” Training team leads plan drills with staged controlled casualties such as fire or flooding for the crew to better assess responses under stress while daily operations intelligence briefs contain adversary specific capability and limitations. We have many months ahead living side by side our shipmates and despite the personal or professional challenges we may face, sailors are locked step in our understanding that we will be a driving force for high standard and mission accomplishment. In the words of our Commanding Officer, “No less that your best.” We drive a powerful naval vessel with capabilities that leave allies and adversaries that with their jaws on the floor. Pride flows through our veins as we commit to upholding the standard, being tip of the spear, and RETURNING WITH HONOR.

Smiling is a powerful tool that we all possess, yet often underestimate. A smile has the ability to uplift our mood, improve our relationships, and even boost our overall well-being. When we smile, our brain releases endorphins, which are neurotransmitters that act as natural painkillers and mood elevators. This can help to reduce stress, anxiety, and even improve our immune system. In fact, studies have shown that smiling can lower heart rate and blood pressure, leading to better cardiovascular health. Furthermore, a smile is contagious. When we share a smile with others, it can create a positive ripple effect, spreading joy and happiness to those around us. This can strengthen our relationships, build trust, and create a sense of connection with others. So, the next time you're feeling down or stressed, try turning that frown upside down and see the power of a simple smile. Not only will it benefit your own well-being, but it can also brighten someone else's day. Remember, a smile is a small gesture that can make a big impact. So, let's all harness the power of smiling and spread positivity wherever we go.

Years ago I recall while serving on warships, every crew member during operations had a sports whistle with a cord around his/her neck. To use it if they saw something wrong, potentially dangerous or not quite right, according to procedures and based on their experience. And the whistles could be heard from time to time, forcing needed pauses and checks. No incentives were given for using the whistles, neither were reprimands permitted. Interestingly, warships are arguably among the most challenging and complex workplaces in the world, and also among the safest, by deliberate design and hard work. So most of us will easily identify with the safety risks and dangers of not speaking up, as in the article, and recall the Challenger Space Shuttle tragedy. The problem is even harder to deal with in organisations undergoing transformation. Most leaders demand and default to compliance, and seek to control conversations. A few weeks ago I was in a client meeting with a few senior executives, and only one, the most senior, spoke for the entire 75 min session. The others chose to stay quiet. There is plenty to think about, as we support our organisations to successfully transform! "Seeking ‘warfighter mindset,’ Air Force basic trainees now carrying rifles through boot camp." ‐--------------- Hmmmm. EDIT. Because I have received over a dozen direct messages telling me how disingenuous I'm being and that "this really isn't news AND that ALL the services carry non-functional / facsimile-drill-only weapons in Recruit Training," please let me state this for the record: The Marine Corps has always issued -- and will always will issue -- fully functional, operationally rated, SL-3 complete Service Rifles to all Recruits. They posses this weapon through at least 95% of Recruit Training. At any given time, Recruits are doing the below with their Service Rifles: 1. Conducting PT (Including runs and humps.) 2. Practicing close order drill / manual-of-arms. 3. Introducing, refining and implementing various entry-level manipulation and maintenance skills (1000-level T&R tasks.) 4. Conducting dedicated live-fire and KD qualification. When not physically in their hands, their rifles are cable-locked to the Recruit's racks in the Squad Bay and guarded 24/7. They literally sleep with them. Recruits become especially AND intimately familiar with that first Service Rifle and many Marines in fact can recall that weapon's serial number decades later.
