Attached is the Monthly Safety Alert For March. The main topic is complacency, a specific type of complacency that comes from years of experience. After a time in any technical profession we become accustomed to what we think we can get away with and not get hurt. Most of the time that is born of may repetitions of taking risks and getting away with it by cutting corners. When we do this, we are playing the odds. With years of positive reinforcement taking risks, we can get caught – it only takes once for a serious injury, or even a fatality to occur. I admonish you all to avoid the short cuts and take the time to make each process as reliably safe as you can. This month we created and implemented a new Safety Incentive Program. It is still, probably won’t stop, evolving. This month, our very first award winners DUSTIN SCALIA and BRANDON WILDMAN, each received $100 gift cards! If you aren’t sure how you can qualify for an incentive award, ask your Regional Manager for details. In our Safety Alert, there are links to further information on the subjects discussed – please use them if you would like to expand on the topics.

If you’re struggling to get your team to complete their mandatory CPR certification, you can try the magic of positive reinforcement. In psychology, positive reinforcement encourages a specific action by providing rewards after that action is taken. In this case, it would involve rewarding your team after they successfully completed their CPR certification course. Need ideas? Here are three ways you can incentivize your employees. 1) Positive Intrinsic Reward – An intrinsic reward is something that makes your team member feel good on the inside, like words of gratitude, appreciation, or praise. 2) Positive Extrinsic Reward – An extrinsic reward is something externally rewarding, like a $5 coffee gift card, a cookie, or getting to leave the office 2 hours early on a Friday. 3) Group Reward – Everyone in the office got CPR certified? Time for a pizza party! Before choosing the one that’s right for you, it’s important to know your team! What are your individual employees motivated by? We’re all different and it’s important to take the time to understand our individual differences. (Behind the Scenes: Did you know that at ProTrainings, we all complete a DISC assessment and share our results with one another to better understand each others’ strengths and motivations? You can try this with your team, too!

This isn’t a very “LinkedIn” type post, but it’s important to me. Winter weather is deadly for people without shelter. Through our volunteer work, my husband and I have seen that firsthand — it’s devastating. Are you looking for a relatively low-effort way to help our unhoused friends during winter weather? If carrying around warmth items isn’t something you want to do, here’s a suggestion: 💳 Gift cards to McDonald’s or other fast food restaurants with seating areas. Understandably, restaurants want folks in their seating areas to be paying for food. That gift card provides a little food and, importantly, a place to get out of the cold for a while. Shelters tend to close at 6:00 am, but it’s still cold out. And there aren’t a lot of places to go afterwards. Grab a few gift cards and keep them on-hand. Easy to give to someone in a quick exchange.

Eric Reyes, who was working on the Alloy project, approached the safety department with a question about the safety of positioning his ladder near the top edge of the stairs. In detail, Eric explained what he was trying to accomplish and how he wanted to place his ladder for the task. He was rewarded with a gift card for asking the right questions and considering safety. Remember, if you ever have a safety question about something you are doing, don't hesitate to ask your supervisor or reach out to the safety department. #SafetyShoutOut #GroundedInSafety

What have you done to lift up your employees, recognizing them for the positive contributions they have made for safety? and I'm not talking gift cards or tee shirts. Get out from behind the desk and go make safety personal.... the endless paperwork will be there when you return, but today, right now you have the ability to change the way we manage safety, the way your employees see you, and see safety. these are your employees, they are not just this months KPI"s. They have families, health issues, financial issues and every other issue we all face. get to know them, understand them and seek to invest in each one of them personally. You can't lead or change the safety culture from a desk or a board room.... its not about rules and regulations..... its about each and every employee, one at a time, one interaction at a time. We can all make the changes we seek to improve safety for our employees. Invest in them on a personal level and once they belive you care, that you are genuine.... the change you seek will follow.

Sometimes taking a risk in your career pays off. I took a risk moving from a company I had known for over 10 years to a small company doing something completely different. It was calculated, and I knew it was going to come with sacrifice. But honestly, my experience here has been incredible. #PMSS truly lives their value “Think Team First”. They provide so much to their employees to make the work experience better. Whether it’s offering certain positions the ability to work a hybrid schedule, offering a range of benefits that promote well-being, having a vegetable garden on-site to provide employees with fresh produce, to giving team members food and other gifts throughout the year. Today, I received a $150 gift card to Giant as a thank you for a successful school year! And they are having a cookout and serving food to EVERY EMPLOYEE that works here. This is how to keep turnover low. This is how to remind people that they are more than just a number. And this is how you entice people who are looking for the highest dollar amount in their wages, to consider staying loyal to a company who actually shows their employees they care. It might not work for everyone, but it certainly makes me think twice about moving to a different company.
