In a world where roads are under constant attack, one menace has plagued mankind for too long. But then an unlikely hero entered the picture. Your days are numbered potholes. Welcome back to There's a Reason for That, a series where we take you behind the barrels and explain what the heck we're up to. Meet Howard Anderson, our state asphalt engineer. Over the last few years, Howard and his team have been working on a binder, AKA the glue that holds asphalt together called PG 7634. Or weren't affectionately known as high mod binder. A high mod asphalt mix is very special. It is more durable, affordable and significantly stronger than any mix before it. How do we know it's better? Well, every material that is used on Utah. Roads gets put through a rigorous testing process or a binder sample. We basically stretch it, put it through fire, twirled around, crush it, pound it, twist it, bop it and then measure any changes to that sample. One test, the Hamburg simulates 20,000 passes of extreme vehicle weight. After the test, the sample can only have 10mm of Redding or indentation in order to pass. Well, Himod absolutely bodied this test and showed little reading even after 40,000 passes under extra weight. So what makes timeout so special? Well there's a lot of chemistry happening here and it's a little like this for non. Engineers but basically the high mod makes it so asphalt can be packed more densely and it reduces air voids that get trapped in the material. As you know, we have a major freeze thaw cycle in Utah. So if there's a lot of air bubbles in the asphalt, water will sink into those, expand and break down the material. So fewer air bubbles is a big deal. It means fewer potholes. I'm out as revolutionizing asphalt as we know it. And you're going to come back for part two of our heroes journey because we're trying to keep short. OK thanks.

PG76-34 is quite the range - the intriguing part of this for me is the “reduction in air voids” used in the mix design and achievable via this wide temp range (without knowing more details, HiMod hints at the ability to achieve a thicker coating on the aggregate without draindown.) Excellent!
