Last week, our staff took a training on gangs in the Merrimack Valley led by UTEC's own Carlos, our Director of Reentry, and Jose, our Director of Streetwork. Gangs exist to meet a need, whether it be for safety, family, or resources to live. We were reminded that gangs themselves are not the problem; it's the systematic issues like poverty, institutional racism, and community disinvestment that create inequality and lack of opportunity for certain groups. By focusing on the root cause of gang activity, we can produce more sustainable solutions to reduce gang violence and improve community well-being. #merrimackvalley #communityviolenceintervention #lowell #lawrence #haverhill #peacemakers

Today we honour Int'l Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. Discrimination is a significant barrier for 2SLGBTQQIA+ people from accessing safe housing! Gender-diverse, Two-Spirit, and trans people face significant, intersecting human rights violations when it comes to housing and accessing emergency shelters, and are more likely to experience hidden homelessness. Today, we are observing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation which commemorates the history and legacy of the Residential Schools System and recognizes the ongoing trauma caused by it. Notably, the intergenerational trauma caused by Residential Schools and colonialism are some of the root causes of homelessness for Indigenous peoples. While having a federal holiday on September 30th is an important step, ensuring all Canadians meaningfully engage with Indigenous communities and in solidarity is key and critical to working towards Reconciliation. Here are some suggestions for you to do today: - Wear orange to visibly show solidarity with survivors - Educate yourself about the Residential Schools System and the ongoing violence and injustice Indigenous communities face - Create awareness and counter racism about these topics within your network #TruthandReconciliation #EveryChildMatters #OrangeShirtDay

April is #FairHousingMonth, marking the 56th anniversary of the passage of the federal Fair Housing Act. 🏠 Fair housing is crucial to thriving communities. We all suffer when people are denied housing opportunities based on their race or disability, because they have children or use a Section 8 voucher, or other unlawful reasons. Not only can discrimination cause financial strain and housing instability, it also creates segregated neighborhoods and exacerbates the homelessness crisis. LAFLA's advocates are here to help with housing issues, including discrimination, eviction, and more. If you need assistance, visit https://lnkd.in/g5GuWXx9. #Housing #Discrimination #Justice

We must seek understanding before judgment. A lot of conversations in the homelessness debate is about refusal of services . Some cities like Boston is attempting to make it sound a person refuses services for homelessness the they will be arrested. This goes against housing first and the rights of those that refuse services. In America we have the freedom of choice. It is up to us to create better programs that the people express needing and wanting to use instead of how we currently build programs. We cannot lead a hoarse to tainted water an expect them to drink. We have been poisoning those that fall through the cracks and now search to punish for not drinking tainted water. We must overcome this by listening to those who refuse services and create empowerment one person at a time. #housingcrisis #empowerment #homelessnsss

Helping people in prison overcome obstacles on release. #AlexThinkingOutLoud is my LinkedIn Hashtag.
Hostile language towards people experiencing homelessness is pernicious and distracts from the root causes... If I could rewrite that sign, it actually wouldn't exist because all a sign does is bark an instruction; it cannot offer support or engage in dialogue with a person, which is actually what is required. Homelessness is a layered societal challenge, with economic, political, legal, and social legacies all contributing to the people currently sleeping rough on our streets and the powerlessness that I currently feel in our ability to change things. Another thought that occurred to me as I passed this sign was that the hostel pathways system used to be a temporary solution and system of support to independent living and more secure tenancies, but what I've been seeing is people literally stuck in the hostel system. In the era of the CRC's it baffled me that a prison could have 5 or 7 CRC workers and only 1-3 housing and tenancy sustainability professionals. #AlexThinkingOutLoud #HMPPS #prison #MOJ #rehabilitation #probation #criminaljustice #jail #criminaljustice #criminology #youthwork #socialwork #housing

Be A Love Warrior! Marginalized communities are more likely to experience poverty, lack of affordable housing, and discrimination in the housing market, pushing them into homelessness at higher rates. Addressing the root causes of racial disparities in homelessness requires that we embrace solutions that center Radical Love. The Supreme Court decision will lead to further stigmatization and violence on our unhoused neighbors. Embracing and protecting Radical Love is imperative. Be A Love Warrior! https://lnkd.in/gqCH4Kh4
